Business Model Shift to Software with John Chen of BlackBerry – Episode 7 of “Chambers Talks: A Podcast Series with John Chambers”

COVID-19 has forced many companies to shift business models overnight. When change is thrust upon leadership, it can be a challenging road to successfully repositioning the brand and culture. That’s why I wanted to sit down with John Chen, Executive Chairman & CEO of BlackBerry, for the next episode of my #ChambersTalks #podcast.

After dominating the market with the first smartphone, which transformed how people work, John is honest about BlackBerry being disrupted. They had to change, quickly. John took a look at BlackBerry’s strengths and made the decision to pivot to #software, founded on BlackBerry’s excellence in #cybersecurity, and communications solutions. The bigger challenge was changing the culture. John shared many lessons learned from this experience with me – a few of my favorites include the importance of making changes in one swoop rather than slowly over time and why the CEO needs to take an ownership mentality when it comes to instilling cultural changes.

Today, BlackBerry is building trust in the future of the Internet of Things by putting their security on virtually every endpoint around the world. In the next 5-10 years, there will be 500 billion connected devices and BlackBerry is navigating this complex, ever-changing landscape in lockstep with businesses and governments alike. As a CEO who defines himself by fairness, accountability, and ownership, I think you will all greatly enjoy the insights John shares in episode 7 of “Chambers Talks: A Podcast Series with John Chambers.”

Struggles are part of managing a business that's why it's very important to have leaders that have great visions for companies to be flexible and to highly adapt in the changes that we are experiencing today.

Very insightful chat as always John, as you’ve said before at Cisco “Companies are successful or not because they get market transitions right” and this is a perfect example of pivoting at the right time!
