Career Plateau? Here's Why You're Feeling Stuck (And How to Break Free)

You may not even know that you have stalled in your career. I didn't know my career was stalled, but I felt the following;

  • Bored in your job, and you last grew a while ago.
  • You lack the energy to contribute and go the extra mile.
  • You are comfortable and keep doing the same things. It feels like you are in a "Groundhog Day" movie.

Reflecting, I learned and built different skill sets while striving for growth.

I was enthusiastic, motivated and energetic. It showed in my work.

I was given various opportunities for promotions and secondments. I also got to work with many outstanding leaders.

If you can relate to this feeling, it's time to take a step back and analyse what might be holding you back.

Here are the three reasons you have stalled in your career and how to overcome them.

The 3 Reasons Why Your Career Has Stalled

1. Lack of career direction

Do you have a clear vision and an action plan of where you want to go in your career? You will likely struggle with direction and focus if you don't have a defined path or vision. With clarity, it's easier to set specific goals or develop a plan to achieve them.

To overcome this, reflect on your strengths, what drives you, and your values. When I coach, I would ask my coachees to write down and reflect on these things. What brings them joy, what drains their batteries, and what do they not enjoy doing? I then help them map a career plan aligning with these elements. Once you have a clear direction, take action. Break down your goals into smaller, achievable milestones, and regularly track your progress.

2. Limited skillsets

First of all, do you know what skills you have? If you don't know what's in your toolkit, what do you add to it or what you're missing?

Also, to keep up with the ever-changing job market, you must continuously update your skills. If you're not learning and growing, you risk falling behind.

To overcome this, I get my coachees to rate themselves on skills in their ideal job descriptions (from step 1, identifying career direction). Then, understand their gaps. From there, look for training programs, seek new challenges or volunteer for new projects to gain experience and close gaps.

3. Fear of change and failure

I was like you. Knowing when to clock in, what to do, and go home is so cushy and comfortable. Why rock the boat? Also, what if's come into your head?

What if I am not good enough in a new job? What if I can't pass probation? What if I can't step up?

This fear can paralyse you from taking the necessary steps to advance your career.

Anything worthwhile requires taking risks (calculated). Nobody knows what will happen in the future, but if you are motivated to grow, taking risks and failing forward are all part of this journey.

I know how much this fear has kept me from doing what I love for many years. Until one day, I got brave (probably out of impulsiveness).

I haven't looked back. So, to overcome this, try reframing failure as a learning opportunity. Focus on what you can gain from trying new things, even if they don't work out. Take small steps outside your comfort zone and gradually increase your confidence.

If you can't quit your job and transition your career immediately because of responsibilities, do things towards that after hours or on weekends.

Final thoughts and advice to my younger self...

Feeling stalled in your career is a common experience, but it's not an insurmountable problem.

Reflecting, planning and taking action can help you start your career again, often to new heights.

By gaining clarity, developing new skills, and reframing your fear, you are well-positioned to climb that mountain.

Remember, success is not a one-time thing but a continuous journey of growth and learning.

I would have told my younger self not to waste precious time by letting my career stall for so long, especially when time can't be bought.
