Conversational Magic
Conversational Magic! Not normally a way you would describe the endless daily meetings, performance reviews and boardroom brawls. Magic evokes the magnificent and a sense of wonder – of being able to achieve the impossible. It was quite by accident that I discovered the meaning of the word “Abracadabra” which from the ancient Aramaic mean “I create as I speak” or in the Hebrew – “It came to pass as it was spoken”. It was a “Wow” moment as it reinforced the power of words to create our future. It was Peter Druker, business visionary who said,
“the best way to predict the future is to create it.” and “I don't predict. I just look out the window and see what's visible but not yet seen.”
When we connect with the creative power of words we realise we have, through each conversation, the power to transform those meetings, conversations and boardroom interactions and to positively impact the bottom line.
As I work with clients every day creating strategic thinking spaces, I see the creative power of conversation in action and I am convinced that the ability to conduct conscious leadership conversations is the game changer for leaders who want to surf the wave of change rather than be swept away by it. There is an inextricable link between strategy and culture and according to Judith Glaser, international conversational intelligence expert, quality conversations result in quality relationships which builds a culture of success. And its all grounded in science! In this series we will explore what it means to practice conversational magic that will transform relationships that gets the best out of your people.
Robert A. Eckert, chairman and CEO of Mattel from 2000 until 2011 demonstrated the power of positive words when he took over a company that was losing million and was facing insurmountable challenges. He addressed the company with these words,
“I know how this works. We will turn things around, and because I’m the new, outsider CEO, I’ll get a lot of the credit. But I know who’s really going to deserve the thanks—all of you. I appreciate what you’re about to accomplish.”
When he retired from Mattel, he was invited by the Harvard Business Review to sum up his journey which he did in these few words,
“…and, by the way, my colleagues executed that transition brilliantly. When HBR invited me to pen a column reflecting on my career, this was my thought: What a perfect opportunity to publicly thank everyone who made my work so much fun! If I’ve practiced what I preach, you know who you are. Conversational Magic in Action!"
So imagine that I could give you a magic wand and through your words you could transform you relationships, your strategy, your results – what would you wish for? In this series we will explore what it means to practice conversational magic because Words really do create Worlds.
