CyberSecurity should be on the agenda to revive transatlantic relations

By Dirk Hoke, CEO, Airbus Defence and Space Reviving transatlantic relations

What are the prospects for enhanced transatlantic cooperation?

Political leaders such as US President Joe Biden, French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel are gathering virtually today for the Munich Security Conference 2021 to discuss about a very key subject for our societies, reviving transatlantic relations

The fact that the new US President is promptly discussing this matter with key allies is a welcome and much-needed signal. In fact, there are many areas where we probably can and should increase collaboration. One of them, I am convinced, is cyber security.

A strong international cooperation is needed

It appears that US President Biden has signaled a willingness for a renewed international collaboration in this sector, which would be great news.

While collaboration has continued between governments at the working level, given the ever increasing challenges we face with cyber-attacks, stronger political and industrial cooperation will be needed to underpin this.

What are the possibilities?

Paddy Francis, Chief Technology Officer for our Airbus CyberSecurity business, has issued an opinion editorial in Computerweekly.com where he outlined some possibilities, seen mainly from a UK angle.

One of his conclusions, which I share, is that governments on both sides of the pond should look at ways how to create the right frameworks for stronger cooperation.

“While the renewed cooperation and increased funding should be good news to UK cyber companies which can help fill some of the gaps”, writes Paddy, “it is difficult for non-US companies to compete for US federal government projects unless they have a foothold in the US, and even more difficult when it comes to cyber security.”

That assessment certainly does not only hold true for the UK but for Europe as well.

In the face of new, diverse threats and geopolitical challenges, the time may be ripe to strike new security arrangements – those that intensify our cooperation in various security and defence areas, including cyber.
