Are Danes open and inclusive?
Jay Choi shared his story on coming to Denmark in my talkshow Anders' Corner

Are Danes open and inclusive?

We like to believe that we live in a tolerant and open society where we treat others the way we wish to be treated. However, this is not always the case, especially as a foreigner living in Denmark. Let me share Jay’s story on his experience in Denmark so far.

Jay joined Deloitte as a Partner 18 months ago, having worked across the UK and Asia. On several occasions and in various places around Copenhagen, Jay has been a victim of physical and verbal abuses in broad daylight. Part of this have been exacerbated with COVID-bullying towards people with Asian background. This is heartbreaking, and I am shocked when I listen to the details of the incidents. When I hear about Jay’s experiences, what disappoints him the most is the ‘silent majority’ who would just observe these incidents. Although none of these incidents happened in Deloitte, we need to address some underpinning culture in Denmark. And more importantly, we need to speak up to change status quo.

Many might argue that the last five parliament elections have been focused on policies surrounding immigration that in turn, leads to more extreme narrative in respect to immigrants. My response is that we need to make a change and that starts with us. It starts with ME. How I welcome and embrace people who want to help build our society. How I can positively impact others so it becomes WE that welcome and embrace foreigners to our country.

The future development of Denmark is significantly dependent upon a foreign workforce to help us stay competitive and build the nation we want. We all need to embrace diversity of thought. In Deloitte, we have zero tolerance towards racism, discrimination or any other disrespectful behavior to other people. We as Danes also need to demonstrate duty of care – look around your network and see if there are others who have similar experiences. Let’s support our colleagues, friends and their families to ensure that they feel welcome in Denmark! It starts with ME to become WE. I hope that we can attract and retain the talented (foreign) workforce that Denmark needs by showing a more open and inclusive mindset.

Thank you for opening up about this topic. It can also be a challenge for danes, living abroad for some years and coming back to Denmark to settle down. I, myself have experienced that, and I have countless examples in my network, that have experienced the same 🙂 let's hope that it is something that will create an awareness about it.

Thank you for sharing this, Anders Dons. It's a really important topic - Is "Anders' Corner" available to watch outside of the firm? Would love to watch.
