Does Your Health Span Equal Your Life Span?
In the pursuit of a long and fulfilling life, the focus often lies on increasing our life span. What is our life span? It’s the total number of years we live. While we all want longevity, it is equally important, if not more important, to have a long health span. The health span is the number of years we live in good health, free from chronic illness and disability. As advancements in healthcare and lifestyle choices extend our life spans, the question arises: does our health span keep pace?
Understanding Health Span and Life Span
Life span and health span are two distinct but interconnected concepts. Life span simply refers to the duration of an individual's life, while health span encompasses the period of life spent in good health, characterized by physical vigor, mental acuity, and overall well-being. As you can figure out here, we want to live long and be healthy for the years we have. But, sadly, that is not the case these days.
The Disparity Between Life Span and Health Span
In an ideal scenario, one's health span would match or even exceed their life span, ensuring that the twilight years are spent enjoying life rather than battling illness. However, reality often presents a stark contrast. Many individuals experience a discrepancy between their health span and life span, wherein they may live longer but not necessarily healthier. Research is showing that many people are living their last 9 to 10 years unhealthy! It's time to change that!
Factors Influencing Health Span
Numerous factors contribute to the length and quality of our health span:

With advancements in healthcare and technology, humans are living longer than ever before. However, this longevity often comes at a cost. Outliving one's health span can lead to an increased prevalence of chronic diseases, diminished quality of life, greater healthcare costs, and heightened dependency on caregivers.
