Canada employment added 150,000 new jobs!

We’ve got some great news for you!

With Canada’s policy of opening the gates wider to new immigrants, temporary workers, and students from abroad - the demand for foreign workers has accelerated in 2023. This was the fifth consecutive month that recorded an increase in the labor market.

According to statistics, a total of 150,000 new jobs were added in the month of January alone – 10 times the median estimate. Meanwhile, the unemployment rate stood strong at a record-low of just 5%. Canada continues to defy all predictions. Learning how to get a job in Canada from India has yielded good results in 2023.

Non-PRs: The biggest contributors to Canada’s economy.

The statistics identify that employment is rising faster among the group of workers that includes non-permanent residents (PRs). Primarily aged 25-54, non-PRs either on a work permit or a study visa are currently the biggest proportion of Canada’s labor force – as well as population.

In January 2023, non-PRs filled a total of 79,000 positions.

Industries in Canada that hired the highest number of non-PRs included Professional, Scientific, & Technical Services, Retail Trade, Accommodation & Food Services, and Healthcare & Social Assistance. Non-PRs in 2023, now make up 3.4% of total employment in Canada.

Industries that saw strong hiring gains in January

The national average of workers in Canada is now $33.01 CAD/hour (INR 2028.67/hour). January saw booming hiring gains in the following industries:

  • Wholesale and Retail Trade - 59,000 jobs filled | Hiring for 128,960 vacancies.
  • Health Care and Social Assistance - 40,000 jobs filled | Hiring for 131,775 vacancies.
  • Educational Services - 18,000 jobs filled | Hiring for 20,180 vacancies.
  • Construction - 16,000 jobs filled | Hiring for 79,025 vacancies.
  • Other Services - 16,000 jobs filled | Hiring for 34,985 vacancies.

The lack of workers continues to be a concern for Canada, as it seeks to fill the drastic labor shortages in almost every industry throughout the country. The gravity of this concern is clearly reflected in the new & improved policies that the Canadian government has implemented.

Since immigrants account for nearly 100% of the growth in Canada’s labor force, the government has made it easier to immigrate and work in Canada – in a bid to maximize its workforce.

Provinces with the greatest increases in hiring

The provinces that recorded the greatest increases in hiring included Ontario, Quebec, Alberta, Nova Scotia, and Saskatchewan. These five provinces filled 144,900 positions in total in the month of January alone. In contrast, Newfoundland and Labrador saw an increase in job vacancies as employment decreased by 2,300 positions in the province.

Provinces in Canada continue to address the labor shortages through their Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs) – and are currently the key source of economic immigration to Canada. Targeted draws are becoming common and IRCC has started conducting more PNP-specific draws rather than all-program Express Entry invitation rounds. As the year progresses, in-demand professions will be one of the key considerations towards receiving an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for Canadian permanent residency.

Canada is desperate for workers.

Now is indeed the best time to immigrate to Canada.
