Every 1 in 5 Indian women suffers from Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), know about its symptoms and diagnostics

PCOS essentially is an acronym for Polycystic Ovary Syndrome. It is a complex condition and largely a hormonal disorder affecting women. The term poly cystic could be inferred as multiple cysts in the ovaries. Though not everyone suffering from PCOS has one or more cysts. Even those who have them need not get them removed.



SYMPTOMS


Some of the common symptoms of this condition include:


1. Periods: that are either irregular, not frequent or heavy. They could have multiple cysts in the ovaries and face difficulty in conception or pregnancy.


2. Hair: there is loss of hair from the scalp. Unwanted male-pattern hair grows on woman’s face and/or neck and back (known as hirsutism).


3. Skin: there are patches of skin that are darker than the remaining areas. This is called as acanthosis nigricans. In addition there is presence of acne on the face or all over the body.


4. Mental Health: there could be mood swings besides feeling of anxiety. Some even have depression.


5. Sleep: those with PCOS at times may take abnormal pauses of breathing while asleep. This is termed as sleep apnoea.


It is noteworthy not all patients might not show all of these signs. Those who have these symptoms could be mild or severe.

Some of the common ailments that can be traced back to PCOS have been listed below. It is important to manage the condition through diet, medication and exercise to ensure that things stay in control.


  • Infertility
  • Diabetes Type 2
  • Cardiovascular Diseases
  • Insulin Resistance
  • Abnormal Cholesterol levels
  • Blood fat abnormalities
  • Endometrial Carcinoma



COMMON DIAGNOSTICS FOR CONFIRMING PCOS


In case you spot any of the symptoms it is best to consult a doctor and get advised tests done (blood test for sugar and hormone level, ultrasound, pelvic exam).
