EXECUTIVE JOB SEEKERS: TOO OLD TO GET A JOB? TOO YOUNG TO RETIRE?

EXECUTIVE JOB SEEKERS: TOO OLD TO GET A JOB? TOO YOUNG TO RETIRE?

Job loss is tough at any age. For younger people, there’s always hope there’s time to climb back. Older job seekers, however, might feel trapped by their age, financial insecurity, and perceived hopelessness driven by other’s reported experiences.

Some years ago, I was asked by a 55+-year-old IT contractor to help him change his career. He believed the IT sector was becoming a young man's game and he feared becoming a dinosaur and unable to continue earning a living.

My usual starting point is to understand your background – digging deep to identify what you are good at, what you are passionate about doing, what might be your perfect next role, and what would make you a unique candidate for it.

IT’S NOT ABOUT YOUR AGE. IT’S ABOUT WHETHER YOU’RE CLEAR ON WHAT YOU WANT AND ARE CORRECTLY POSITIONED FOR IT

That approach identified the IT contractor was still passionate about his field of expertise and we worked closely together to identify what made him unique in his field and why organisations would value and reward him accordingly.  He was then re-positioned as a true expert.

5 years later I got a call from that technology expert on Christmas Eve, thanking me for the help I’d given him and telling me he’d never had a day without highly-paid work since that time.

The big news he was excited to share that Christmas Eve though, was he’d been headhunted for an international role where he was the technical expert they desperately needed, and would be paid more than he ever earned before!

AGE IS CLEARLY NOT THE BARRIER

TOO YOUNG TO RETIRE?

Early retirement, historically, was a bonus – but the pull of a pipe and slippers existence doesn’t appeal to a generation that is fitter, still mentally agile and is not ready to ‘hang their boots up yet’!

So, what is your ideal retirement age? When the clock trips over into qualifying you for a state pension, it doesn’t mean you’ve reached the end of your usefulness – you don’t have to stop working if you don’t want to!

Those of you in your 50’s need to recognise, for you, your state pension qualifying age is likely to be nearer 75! You still have 20 to 25 years of gainful employment left in you!

The number of people still working into their 80’s is increasing. Some out of necessity for sure, but many because they still have an interest and determination to make a difference!

You will have gathered incredible experience over the years. Yes, technology is rapidly changing the workplace – but it still revolves around people, and your experience is still valuable.

SO, PLEASE RECOGNISE, YOU’RE NOT TOO OLD TO GET A JOB – AND YES, YOU PROBABLY ARE TOO YOUNG TO RETIRE!

The important thing now is to determine what you do want for yourself! If you want to work; what sort of work, what size of organisation, in what sector and where would you be based and operate in? Would it give you genuine satisfaction or heartache?

It’s no different than deciding to buy a house, a car, or a holiday – if you could choose, what would you choose? Something you’d prefer, or something you’d just put up with?

DON’T TAKE A RISK ON YOUR FUTURE.

Professional advice and guidance can make you stand out and set your job search campaign ahead of your major competition.

Have you ever enlisted expert help - to ensure you are better prepared, better presented and perform better than others?

If you have never taken professional advice on how to job search correctly, how can you expect to do it in the right way?

It’s your future. Does that matter to you?

If now isn’t the right time – when will be?
