A foodie and globetrotter's journey: follow Chris' unconventional path from a Semicon Purchaser...to an inspired Tech Sales Manager!

In a world of ever-changing career paths, Maria Cristina Razon 's (or endearingly known as Chris to us!) story stands out as an inspiration for those who dare to follow her passion. Starting in the semicon manufacturing industry as a purchaser responsible for budget control and negotiations, Chris realized that technology was her true calling. Taking a leap of faith, Chris transitioned into the exciting realm of tech sales. In this exclusive interview, we delve into Chris' career journey, exploring her motivations, challenges, and the triumphs that led them to where she is today. 1) Tell us about your career journey, Chris.

Before embarking on a career as a Sales Rep in tech, I was working in the semicon manufacturing industry, as a purchaser, responsible for budget control, delivery and cost down negotiations. I soon realised it was not my passion and moved in ERP coordinator role - with Emirates in DUBAI!

However, (back in the days....) it was hard to communicate with family back home (imagine a life abroad without Viber, WhatsApp, Telegram, and all the other highly-connected apps to stay in touch!!!), and it got especially hard when I missed important family events, and I didn't have the same support system as I did in Philippines. So I went back home, and that's how my exciting sales in tech career started!

2) So, why tech and why sales?

When I decided to return to Philippines to further my career, I desired a career that would allow me to pursue my passion for technology and well, as they say, career in sales pays well.😜

Motivated by these factors, I made a significant career change and transitioned into channel sales of Network & Security distributions. Within the tech industry, I find that the rapid advancements in artificial intelligence and its potential to transform industries fascinated me, and I wanted to contribute to its adoption and growth, which led me to become part of ADVANCE.AI family.

3) Quick round: Don't overthink, and tell us 3 fun facts about yourself!

One, I am a dedicated mother of not one, but TWO (almost) teenagers! It is pretty crazy and hectic managing a challenging channels sales job, and being the mediator of two teenagers who are occasionally, sometimes and frequently clawing at each other. That said, I do love the support I get from them in spite of everything - especially because amidst the chaos, they're extremely understanding towards the pressure from my job, and give me the love and motivation when it matters.

The second thing is I LOVE TRAVELING! Traveling provides me a chance to escape the routines of daily life, connect with different cultures, and meet new people along the way. It also offers unique opportunities for my personal growth, self-discovery and independence. AND, it pushes me out of my comfort zone! As a parent, whilst I have added responsibilities and considerations, my love for travel has not diminished over the years. Instead, it has evolved into a beautiful opportunity to share the world with my children and create lifelong memories together. Of course, I will get the chance to clock some solo travels, hopefully before retirement.😊

And the third thing is that I love, LOVE cooking. My involvement in the kitchen started at a young age when I used to help my grandma prepare food for the family together with my sister and cousin and that experience shaped my love for cooking. And trust me, my family loves my creations too!

4) How does your personal life influence your career aspirations and the type of work you want to do?

Overall, my personal life does play a crucial role in shaping my career aspirations and the type of work I want to undertake as a channel person, as the combination of experiences, values, and interests I have developed outside of work profoundly influence my professional goals and the direction I seek in my career.

My personal life has taught me the value of building authentic relationships, fostering collaboration, and making sure what I do will bring joy to the people I care about. I cherish meaningful connections and believe in the power of teamwork. This perspective naturally aligns with the role of a channel manager, as it revolves around nurturing partnerships, fostering cooperation, and working closely with internal teams and external partners to achieve shared objectives. The ability to connect with others and develop mutually productive relationships is a driving force behind the type of work I seek and the satisfaction I derive from it.

Furthermore, as a channel manager, I aim to build trust with our partners by consistently demonstrating ethical behavior, maintaining open lines of communication, and ensuring that our collaborative efforts are founded on a solid ethical framework. This personal value guides my decision-making and shapes the type of work environment I desire—one that values and upholds integrity at every level.

5) Can you share an example of how ADVANCE.AI has made a positive impact on your life?

Being in the cybersecurity space for more than a decade, I have developed an appreciation for the broader discipline that encompasses protecting information systems and data across industries. Now that I am in an AI/eKYC/AML company, I am getting a chance to see best of both worlds, which are essential for ensuring the security and integrity of financial transactions and protecting customers, institutions, and the overall financial system as a whole. Being a consumer myself (I love online shopping and doing a lot of my transactions through mobile phone), I am further motivated to ensure effective eKYC processes and AML compliance, which promote transparency and protect individuals and organizations from fraud and money laundering. Personal life experiences can cultivate empathy and understanding, which are crucial qualities for my role as a Channel Partnership Manager. Being able to relate to the challenges and concerns of your partners, as well as the end-users, will enable you to build stronger relationships and provide better support and guidance.

6) What is that one life lesson you have learned in your career journey for which you are grateful?

Throughout my career, I have witnessed how rapidly evolving technologies, industry landscapes, and market dynamics can impact organizations and individuals. I have realized that resisting change or being hesitant to adapt can hinder personal and professional growth.

By embracing change and cultivating adaptability, I have been able to navigate through various challenges and seize new opportunities. It has allowed me to stay ahead of the curve, learn new skills, and embrace emerging trends and technologies.

Gaining adaptability and being able to embrace changes have not only enhanced my career prospects but also enriched my personal life. It has taught me the value of remaining flexible, agile, and open to new experiences. I have become more receptive to diverse perspectives, more willing to step out of my comfort zone, and more confident in my ability to handle whatever challenges come my way.

7) Who or what has been your source of inspiration while working in this industry?

My two amazing children - to build a better future for them. They represent the future generation, and their well-being is paramount to me. Working in the eKYC/AML industry, I contribute to combating financial fraud, protecting businesses and individuals and promoting financial inclusions, aligns with my desire to build a better future for them. My work helps create a safer environment for my children and future generations, ensuring their security and integrity.

8) How has it been for you to work as a woman in a male-dominated industry? And how do you stay motivated?

Women may face the need to establish their credibility and expertise in order to be taken seriously. Favorably, in today's generation, we are now breaking these stereotypes and pave the way for more inclusivity and diversity in the industry. Staying motivated is a personal journey. In ADVANCE.AI, I found new allies and support networks. They recognize and value the unique perspective and strengths that I bring to the table as a woman. As a team, we are hyper-focused on building a growth mindset, reframing obstacles as potential learning opportunities, and maintaining a positive attitude in the face of adversity. As an individual, I recognize and celebrate my accomplishments, no matter how small, giving myself credit for the milestones I achieved along my professional journey.
