THE FOUR GOLDEN RULES

THE FOUR GOLDEN RULES

We know by now that LEAN is all about improvement and sustenance of such improvement. For thoughts to become reality, action is the only way. If our thoughts are crystal clear, we can devise the best plans and act on them.

For success to be identified, we should be able to know where we started and where we are now. If we are on a long trip, we keep monitoring the distance travelled and time taken and compare it with our originally intended plan to move forward at a certain speed. We note our progress by looking at the milestones that we cross. And if we maintain the speed in a consistent manner, we reach our destination on time as planned.

In any business or industry, we need to follow a similar concept. These are stated in what is rightly termed “The Four Golden Rules”. They are:

  1. What cannot be MEASURED cannot be STABILISED
  2. What cannot be STABILISED cannot be STANDARDISED
  3. What cannot be STANDARDISED cannot be SUSTAINED
  4. What cannot be SUSTAINED cannot be IMPROVED

Thus, MEASUREMENT is the first step towards improvement. STABILIZATION of operations to eliminate or minimize variations is the next. Once this is done, it is possible to develop STANDARDS which can be understood by all involved so that they do not deviate from it. The biggest challenge in life is holding on to what we have attained. Often, we get complacent and let our success slip away gradually even before we realize and we go back to where we started. SUSTENANCE is thus the most important need to stay successful.

If we reach the level of SUSTENANCE and maintain it, we are at a point when we can think of further IMPROVEMENTS. Improvement is a continuous process. It is not a destination but a never ending journey.

Thus we can see that the starting step of MEASUREMENT leads us to the final landing point of SUSTENANCE and Continuous Improvement. More on these in the next post.
