A gift to self. Book 'Life lessons from Nelson Mandela...'

Nelson Mandela still brings us valuable life lessons, even from beyond the grave.

Have you ever wondered why some people go through difficult times, just to emerge better, while others go through difficult circumstances, just to become bitter and drop out of life?

The COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdown have placed humanity in just such a position. We must choose; Will we become better – or bitter? What drives us to make the right choices? Nelson Mandela was in prison for 27-years. He emerged as the inspiring leader that he was. As President of South Africa, Madiba set a new tone of forgiveness, love, and compassion for the local and global community.

Although he was initially branded as a dangerous terrorist, a murderer, and was blacklisted by the US and the government of that time, Madiba stood steadfast in his belief in himself, his belief in a free and democratic society, and his vision of a bright future that included everyone.

After his release from prison, or 'lock-up' period, Nelson Mandela started to change the world, how people think, believe, and behave.

While many still focus on all Madiba's hardships and suffering, it is important to remember that Madiba started to live his best life – we can even call this a '5-Star life', at the age of 80 years - and only after his imprisonment.

Not only did he bring about change, but he also found and married the love of his life. In the end, Madiba had achieved his goal, fulfilled his calling, and died a happy man. This kind of quality of life does not come without being conscious. aware, and mindful about every choice you make.

The questions are: What choices did Madiba make during his imprisonment, or 'lockdown' period that not only created a new life for him and his people but benefitted everyone else? What hidden opportunities lie beneath the surface of being in lockdown/prison? What fundamental life lessons can be found in hardship and suffering? What can we learn from Nelson Mandela and the legacy he left for those who are prepared to listen and travel the path of authentic living and leading?
