Poultry & Eggs

Cuba’s imports of poultry meat from the United States increased by 41.7% in 2021 compared to the previous year. The country’s domestic production has declined by 92% since the 1990s.

France has experienced its worst ever season of bird flu and Dutch farmers have recently been urged to confine their poultry due to rising number of dead birds found in various parts of the Netherlands. Almost everyday, bird flu is being reported in the UK. The USDA’s Agricultural Research Service (ARS) cut the ribbon on October 4 to mark the opening of its new poultry research facility in Athens, Georgia. “This modernized facility will serve as the largest poultry research facility in the United States and will house the largest number of researchers and collaborators dedicated to the prevention, detection and resolution of poultry health problems,” said Chavonda Jacobs, USDA Chief Scientist and Undersecretary for Research, Education and Economics.

Industrial eggs on the French spot market, which are driven by supply and demand, were trading at €2.2 ($2.2) per kilogram on Wednesday, more than double from the beginning of the year

In 2023, China’s poultry production is expected to stabilize at 14.3 million tons. Imports in 2023 (excluding legs) are expected to reach 750,000 tonnes compared to the lower rate in 2022. China’s exports are expected to grow by 5% to 575,000 tonnes in 2023 as demand picks up again in mature and emerging markets.

Beef & Dairy

Lumpy skin disease has killed over 100 000 cows and made 2 million people sick in India this year. The virus has spread to at least 15 states, with cattle and buffalo deaths nearly doubling in three weeks.

According to ADHB organic meat sales in the UK have fallen 16% and still only have a 0.2% of the total market share. The main reason for the small share and decline is because it tracks around 5% more than non organic meat.

Milk deliveries in the UK for the first six months of 2022 were 1.9% below previous year levels, equivalent to a drop of 145m litres.

Pork

Processed pork is one of the product lines with the lowest percentage of waste in Spanish households. Spain's pig farming sector, which is reducing its greenhouse gas emissions and water consumption year after year.

The US pork industries is urging California to loosen the 2018 laws regarding Prop 12 law, which defines the minimum amount of space that mother pigs, baby cows, and laying hens must be given. the main opposers of the law are the American Farm Bureau Federation and the National Pork Producers Council.

As of September 1, there were 73.8 million hogs and pigs on U.S. farms, down 1% from September 2021 but up 2% from June 1, 2022, according to the Quarterly Hogs and Pigs report published today by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS).

Brazil's pig inventory grew 3.2% in 2021, reaching 42.5 million animals. Half of the national herd is in the South Region with pig production of 21.4 million animals. With 7.8% growth and 8.4 million head, Santa Catarina continues to lead at the state level, followed by Paraná and Rio Grande do Sul.

Plant Based

Vow opens the largest cultivate meat facility in the Southern hemisphere that can produce 30MT per day. Last year, Vow raised $6 million in a seed round to further research, develop and manufacture unconventional cultured meats from novel species such as kangaroos, alpacas and quails.

Technology

Consumers will soon be able to buy ready-to-eat meals, made with New Zealand beef and lamb, from vending machines in Shanghai.

Maple Leaf Foods recently completed construction of a new value-added poultry processing facility in London. The 600,000-square-foot facility is in response to high demand for halal and antibiotic-free chicken products. 600 employees will be employed at the plant by the end of this year, and when the site reaches full capacity, the plant will eventually employ about 1,600 people.


Container Shipping News

A huge number of new large container ships will set sail at a time of sluggish demand in 2023. Alfaliner warned in a report on Tuesday., "The market will struggle to accommodate all these new vessels.”

Containerships announced the direct service between Germany and the UK, marketed as “DUKE”, connecting mainland Europe and the Eastern coast of the UK.

One of the world’s biggest ship charterers, Cargill has been testing the operational performance of biofuels in its vessels since the start of the year as it steps up efforts to go green.

Tyson Foods plans to relocate 1,000 employees into offices in the Chicago area and South Dakota. In total, the meat company employs about 120,000 Americans, of whom about 114,000 work in production facilities.

Tesco confirmed that overall sales were up 7% year-on-year and a 3.5% increase in actual sales. However, Tesco’s statutory operating profit fell 43.6% overall year-on-year as the group reported the impact of “significant cost inflation”.

Muyuan Foods said in an official WeChat statement it will increase its supply of pigs to ensure prices stay within a reasonable range and the supply of pork in the market is sufficient.

Tyson’s current vice president and chief financial officer, Stewart Glendinning, has been promoted to group president of Prepared Foods.

John R. Tyson will replace Glendinning as Tyson’s CFO.
