The UN’s recent report, “Governing AI for Humanity,” shines a spotlight on the complexities and contradictions in AI governance. The stakes are high, and the need for collective global action is more urgent than ever.

Maybe effective AI governance isn't solely about global frameworks but about empowering individuals worldwide to understand and influence AI's direction. By fostering public awareness, we can create a collective conscience that guides AI development more ethically than regulations alone.

As AI has to be cross-functional to create value it is tricky to define who owns it. Some organizations in the private and public sector have created the function of CAIO (Chief AI officer) but this has not always been efficient as other functions had to give a piece of their accountabilty to that person. Other organizations assign the CIO and/or CTO to be the owner or co-owners but these roles have to be reshaped which is not easy too. So far, I have supported the creation of an AI champion within organizations I am working with. It may be considered as a soft approach but it is a good way to avoid potential conflicts between several functions claiming the ownership of AI. And it helps install the beginning of governance.
