halow project newsletter January 2023
Happy New Year!
We hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and a happy celebration for the new year! Everyone at halow is excited to see what opportunities and achievements 2023 will bring for the wonderful people we support.
We already have plenty of good news to share and opportunities for you to get involved and support halow this year.
Funding for Cook and Grow
Thank you so much to the National Lottery Awards for All for donating a brilliant £8,970 to A Reason To Get Up's Cook and Grow project. This funding will help us continue to encourage young people to learn how to grow fresh produce from scratch and learn to turn it into a delicious and nutritious meal.
Cook and Grow were also delighted to receive a £3,000 grant from the Wisley Foundation to support young people growing produce like fresh fruit and vegetables - thank you!
Crafty Creations exhibit work
Crafty Creations really enjoyed working with Guildford Borough Council and Guildford Museum to learn about Henri Matisse. They are now delighted to see their artwork, inspired by his style, on display in Guildford Museum until the end of March 2023.
Henri Matisse (31 December 1869 – 3 November 1954) was a French artist known for his use of colour and his original ideas. He was originally a painter, but illness meant he was confined to a wheelchair and unable to hold a pencil or paintbrush. Instead, he made collages using scissors and paper. He called it painting with scissors.
The group designed a group collage inspired by Matisse’s work to be displayed as part of a community project alongside art from other community groups and schools.
Melanie, who is an Access, Education and Engagement Officer for Guildford Borough Council, thought the group took on the project with great enthusiasm. She said: “Working with the Crafty Creations group has been great as they are always enthusiastic about contributing to our exhibitions and have produced a high standard of work which we are delighted to share with our visitors. By coincidence their art tutor had run a session on Matisse earlier in the year so our session was able to consolidate this work and give the young people the opportunity to further practise Matisse’s cut-out technique and apply it to a work to go on public display.”
Stevens & Bolton festive fundraising
A big thank you to Stevens and Bolton for raising £145 through a collection on the night of their Christmas Carol Concert last month.
They also kindly welcomed halow to have a stall at the event, selling some beautiful cards and items created by our young people. Along with these sales, halow benefitted from almost £300 raised from the evening - a fantastic total.
We are so grateful for Stevens and Bolton's support for our charity. They also kindly sponsored the cards created by our young people this year - now available to buy at a discounted rate should you wish to be prepared for Christmas 2023!
We are keen to work with more corporate partners in 2023. If your company is interested in sponsoring events or entering teams, finding interesting and worthwhile volunteering opportunities, or donating prizes, equipment or expertise, please contact fundraising@halowproject.org.uk. In return we can share with you the rewarding and uplifting opportunity to support people with learning disabilities aged 16+ to make the most of life – it’s the perfect resolution to last all year round, not just for January!
