How can CBN grinding wheels reduce the residual stress on the gear surface during internal grinding?

In the internal grinding of gear, the use of CBN grinding wheel can effectively reduce the residual stress on the gear surface. This result is mainly due to the physical characteristics of the CBN grinding wheel and the characteristics of the grinding process.

The CBN grinding wheel has high hardness and wear resistance, which allows it to remain sharp during grinding, thus reducing the generation of grinding heat. Grinding heat is one of the main factors leading to the increase of residual stress on the surface of materials. The application of electroplated CBN grinding wheel in the grinding process shows that compared with traditional grinding wheel, CBN grinding wheel can improve the residual stress on the gear surface and effectively prevent the grinding crack. This is because the grinding efficiency of the CBN wheel is high, and the heat generated during the grinding process is less, thus reducing the thermal damage of the material.

The self-sharpening effect of the CBN grinding wheel also helps to reduce residual stress on the gear surface. During grinding, the bond of the CBN wheel is worn out, revealing a new abrasive cutting edge, and this self-sharpening effect helps to maintain the sharpness of the wheel, thereby improving grinding efficiency and quality. In addition, the self-sharpening effect of the metal bonded layer coated single-row abrasive small diameter CBN grinding wheel during the end grinding process, through the wear behind the abrasive grain, the cutting edge is broken and off, and the new abrasive cutting edge is constantly generated, which maintains the sharpness of the grinding wheel and prolongates the service time of a single abrasive.

The use of appropriate grinding parameters is also the key to reduce the residual stress on the gear surface. For example, by adjusting parameters such as the grinding feed speed, wheel speed and depth of cut, the grinding process can be optimized to reduce the generation of grinding heat and thus reduce the residual stress on the material surface. In addition, dressing V-shaped CBN wheel with large abrasive particles by laser dressing can further improve the quality of the grinding surface and reduce the wear during grinding, thus helping to reduce the residual stress on the gear surface.

By selecting the right type of CBN grinding wheel (such as electroplated CBN grinding wheel), using its self-sharpening effect, and adopting the appropriate grinding parameters and technologies (such as laser dressing), the residual stress on the gear surface can be effectively reduced, and the surface quality and fatigue life of the gear can be improved.
