HOW TO CONTROL OVER INDULGENCE

The festive season is a time for celebration, connection, and joy. But for many of us, it’s also a time when self-control takes a backseat, and indulgence becomes the driver. You find yourself reaching for that extra mince pie, polishing off the box of chocolates or a glass of wine soon becomes the bottle.

In the moment, it feels harmless. We shrug off the indulgence as a festive treat. But when the guilt creeps in, and we reflect on what we have done we realise we have lost control of the choices we’re making.

THE POWER OF CHOICE

It’s easy to blame external forces – festive adverts, family gatherings, or the abundance of sweets and drinks that flood our tables. “It’s Christmas” or “Everyone’s doing it.” But at the heart of it all, there’s just one person making the choices: you.

Our desires, whether for food, drink, or comfort, are natural. They’re human. But the key to control lies in recognising them and deciding what’s right for you. Do you really want that extra slice of stollen? Is alcohol truly adding to your joy, or is it taking something away?

The good news is you can regain control. By becoming mindful of your choices and reprogramming your mindset, you can strike the balance between enjoying yourself and feeling your best.

HOW TO TAKE BACK CONTROL

It doesn’t have to be a battle between indulgence and guilt. Here are a few simple strategies to help you stay on track:

Visualise Control: Imagine filling up your car with petrol, when the tank is full you stop. You would never start filling up the boot or the back and front seats! Treat your body the same way. Fuel it with what it needs and stop before it overflows. Just like a car.

Pause Before You Act: Before reaching for another chocolate, take a breath. Ask yourself, “Do I really want this, or is it just there?” Often, a brief pause is enough to break the cycle.

Be Honest with Yourself: If you’re overindulging, acknowledge it. Avoid justifying it with phrases like, “It’s Christmas, who cares?” Awareness is the first step toward change.

Mindful Moments: Apply mindfulness to eating and drinking. Savor each bite or sip, paying attention to the flavours, textures, and sensations. When you’re truly present, you’ll find that less is often more. Note, the opposite of ‘mindful eating and drinking’ is ‘mindless eating and drinking’.

The best version of you, the one who feels happy, calm, and in control, comes from making the right choices. It’s not about saying no to everything. It’s about choosing what’s best for you.
