How decentralized food production & urban farming can serve as catalysts for food security & effective food system optimization.
Hello good food family!
Good evening, I trust you have had a most productive week, I think I will now call everyone who subscribes to The Food Renaissance a member of THE GOOD FOOD FAMILY!
The Food Renaissance exists to keep you informed on the mission to provide good food for everyone, everywhere, every time in collaboration with food system actors, and the architecture and implementation of effective, resilient food systems designed to ensure people and businesses everywhere have access to well graded, high quality food that nourishes bodies and powers economies.
My thoughts on The Food Renaissance this week takes a very interesting focus on how decentralizing food production & urban farming or food capturing & production can serve as catalysts for #foodsecurity and effective food system optimization.
When food systems are being designed, one of the major things you do is map the populations you are designing for, that will mean you take into consideration the number of people the output from the system you are designing should cater to, the availability of resources like land, bodies of water, and other resources needed for food production, human capabilities, equipment available and some other key factors.
The state of our current food systems require efforts from everyone that can be brought into the capturing. production, processing, distribution, and delivery of good food and that means we map out available resources within urban areas and designate them for food production, given the though shared in the paragraph above that will also mean we ensure that a percentage of the food needed to feed people in every region or state is produced within that region, also taking into consideration the fact that certain foods grow better in some climes than they do in some others.
I had a conversation with Emeka Christian Umunnakwe of the Coalition of African Youths in Agriculture (COAYIMA) one of the panelists from our maiden edition of the World day food forum someone who is gladly fast becoming a friend some days ago, we discussed how to tackle the current deficits and the projected effects of said deficits in the coming year in our food production and that shaped what I decided to share on this weeks edition of The Food Renaissance.
Some of the plans are to ensure we train people everywhere, starting first in Lagos on how to grow food in your space, believe me there are many creative ways to do this, and also to empower more food system actors with knowledge on how to get more out of their current efforts with the work we do with Collaborator
Collaborator is a food system solution, a tool that serves food system actors with the tools they need to source and buy everything they need to create great food, and sell everything they create to B2B2C markets, locally and globally, we are daily adding capabilities to Collaborator to serve our food system actors.
How do we ensure decentralized food production? Empower food system actors in these decentralized regions with the tools they need to create good food and the markets to sell all they create.
Why urban food production? We need more food produced, and more of that food produced closer to where it is being consumed, urban food production alongside a decentralized food production approach will ensure our food systems are more resilient and less prone to disruptions as the markets for the food is closer to the production sites.

To further bolster the activities of our food system actors we are having Nigeria's first fully virtual food, water & beverage exhibition called The Good Food & Beverage exhibition, and it will be holding on the 13th & 14th of December 2024
It will feature various food system actors with the amazing products they create, everything from farm fresh produce. to livestock, to tubers, processed food, water, drinks, groceries etc. at up to 20% of market prices on selected products
If you are a farmer, a trader, a food processor, a Chef, and you have amazing products to show case you will want to register free to have a stand and a slot to exhibit, you will be exhibiting and selling out, you will also get to meet market makers locally and internationally, enterprise support organizations, and potential investors. You should share this with someone who you think needs to exhibit here,
We already have some amazing brands registered to exhibit.
Urban food production comes with innumerable benefits, increased food security, job creation, less food waste, food diversification, decreased food cost as the added cost of logistics in-between far production sites and the people and businesses who need them are eliminated, definite urban improvement in every way you can imagine, better air quality, the food produced is healthy and it requires limited packaging, talk about farm to table.
Want to start growing food today?
We have some training coming up that will help you get started right where you are, I should share more on the next episode of The Food Renaissance in a few days,
Have an amazing evening!
Cheers!
