So, what is personal branding? It’s not just about the clothes you wear, the watch on your wrist, or how fluent your English is. Personal branding is much more than surface-level impressions.

Your personal brand is what people think about you, feel about you, and say about you—even when you’re not in the room. It’s the lasting impression you leave in their minds, and it directly influences how others perceive your value and potential.

The 7/11 rule states that people form 7 impressions of you in the first 11 seconds of meeting you. While this originally applied to in-person meetings, the same applies to your LinkedIn profile, resume, and how you engage online.

The way you present yourself digitally (or in-person) creates a lasting impression. The question is: Are you making the right one?

Here are 10 common mistakes that even skilled professionals make—and how you can avoid them:

  1. A Bland LinkedIn Profile A generic profile headline like “Engineer at XYZ” won’t catch anyone’s attention. Your headline should scream value!

Example:

Instead of: “Software Developer at ABC Corp.”

Write: “Full-Stack Developer | Helping Businesses Scale with Customized Web Solutions | 7+ Years Experience in React & Node.js”

2. No Personal Brand Story People connect with stories, not jargon. If you’re not showcasing how your journey aligns with the role, you’re leaving connections on the table.

Failing to share your unique journey leaves your profile forgettable.

Example:

“I transitioned from teaching to tech because I love solving problems. Today, I help startups streamline operations using AI-powered tools.”

3. Being Passive on LinkedIn Lurking but not engaging? Employers notice active professionals who share insights and contribute value to discussions.

Scrolling endlessly without contributing makes you invisible.

Example:

Start by commenting on posts, sharing articles, or writing a simple post like: “Here’s what I learned from leading my first cross-functional project.”
