IMG Rural GP Programme: a prime work opportunity in Ireland for Non-EU doctors

Despite ongoing efforts, the shortage of doctors remains a significant challenge for the Irish healthcare system, particularly in rural areas. This is why the Irish College of GPs (ICGP) has introduced an initiative that has been warmly welcomed: a mentoring and training programme for medical doctors from countries outside the European Union (Non-EU).

The International Medical Graduate (IMG) Rural GP Programme is specifically designed to equip non-EU doctors with the necessary skills to practice as General Practitioners (GPs) in rural communities throughout Ireland. The programme also aims for participants to achieve Specialist Registration with the Irish Medical Council after completing the two-year programme. This marks a substantial career advancement in terms of practice and remuneration, serving as an incentive to attract international doctors and encourage their long-term commitment to the country.

What is the programme about?

This comprehensive and unique programme rests on three pillars:

Supervised practice

Over two years, IMGs work in daytime rural GP practice, with some GP out-of-hours work. They are supervised and receive support and practical guidance from the host GP practice.

Educational support

IMG GPs engage in self-directed learning under mentorship and support. Upon arrival, they undergo a learning needs assessment and attend a two-day face-to-face training by ICGP. Subsequently, within months, they participate in another two-day training session. Throughout the programme, they also undertake online training focusing on essential aspects of general practice in rural settings, including chronic disease management, mental health, child health, and gynaecology.

Qualification achievement

Upon successful completion of the programme, participants are eligible to sit for the ICGP Membership (MICGP) exam. This certification is crucial for full registration as a GP in Ireland and ensures adherence to high standards of medical practice.

Who is eligible for the programme?

The IMG Rural GP Programme for Non-EU professionals require applicants to have a minimum of three years of medical practice, including at least three months in general practice and paediatric medicine. Proficiency in English (IELTS 7.0 or higher, or minimum B in OET) is also mandatory. The programme's admission process includes a personal interview to assess the suitability of candidates.

Impact and benefits

Originally launched as a pilot in 2019, the programme was postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic but resumed in 2022. To date, it has supplied 100 GPs to rural areas and aims to recruit 250 experienced international doctors by the end of 2024. In essence, it stands as a comprehensive and well-structured initiative that facilitates career advancement for IMGs while enhancing primary care services in some of Ireland's most underserved regions. This win-win initiative underscores the importance of innovative solutions in health workforce development.
