Job seekers, showcase your skills! The time is now!
Times change and procedures adapt, in an alert pace. Especially during these times, when the entire world is affected by this virus and the only contact can happen on-line.
Although despair may become our best friend, as fear is being fed through every given channel, the best we can do is to control ourselves. But this is a way different topic I will be approaching very soon.
Showcase your skills
Before isolation hit the world, 95% of job seekers would place a CV on some platform, would send pitching messages on LinkedIn, roll the dice of despair in almost begging to be hired, then wait for something to happen. For someone to come back to them. For the world to be in need of their services, on an over-saturated workforce market. This is the old way.
During present times, recruiters and decision-making individuals are keeping themselves in a shadowy corner, observing people via social media with even more interest than before. And here is where the good (if not great!) piece of news takes the stage. The new way.
It is the perfect timing for skills to be transparently shown. Rows written on a piece of paper mean close to nothing if you can't prove the skills you mentioned in a CV. Regardless of the industry you are looking for a job in, there must be at least one thing you can showcase.
How to showcase your skills online
When I say "showcase" I mean really being transparent and HONEST about what you can do very well.
But there's a step back you need to take before putting yourself out there. And that IS PERSONAL OBJECTIVE ASSESSMENT. This activity implies evaluating your own strengths, unique set of personality traits, soft skills and capability of putting into practice what you studied.
Therefore, take some time alone and think about it. Yes, you do have a resume that has been made publicly available to all employers. However, what can't be seen while reading a resume is YOU - the job seeker, as a person. Now, more than ever before, making a video in which employers can observe you is of immeasurable value.
Preparing your material
As I mentioned before, you need to take a step back and properly and objectively assess yourself.
To make it even easier for you, I suggest you have your resume in front of you. Then pick another piece of paper and, out of the enlisted degrees and fields of expertise (if applicable), pick the one you enjoy the most. When you work, you should also enjoy what you do, otherwise you will not do it at full intensity, giving the best in you.
After choosing the activity you love, write down the skills you have gained, related to that area. At the same time, be true to yourself and acknowledge whether you need to acquire more information or you have enough to keep you going. Of course, learning and keeping up with industry trends should be at high stake, at all times.
Once the 2 aforementioned points are complete, figure out the value you can add to an employer. Know that you are unique, although there may be a lot of people doing what you do. However, the vibration you send and the passion you put into delivering your service might just be that unique set of skills you possess. To help you with this point, here is a question to ask yourself: what am I incredibly good at, in combining knowledge, experience and soft skills?
Once you have a clear answer, write it down, as detailed as possible. You will narrow it down when the time comes.
Shooting your video
Making a video in which you showcase your skills may be intimidating, especially if you never shot a video before.
My most powerful advice is to do this exercise before sitting in front of the camera: sit down, close your eyes and take deep breaths. Slowly inhale through your nose, count to 5 and slowly exhale through your mouth. Do this 3 to 10 times in a row. Once this exercise is complete, your heartbeat will have decreased, your brain is very well oxygenated and you enter into a state of calmness. Anxiety can't enter your territory once you surround yourself with peace of mind.
Then, think for a moment and write down how you would like to present yourself in front of the employer. While doing this, do your best to see yourself as the employer as well. Put yourself in their shoes for a second - If you were them, what would you like to see in a job seeker's video?
Then, simply pick up your phone or camera and press record.
Here are a few tips:
- Place the camera in front of you, so that the head and part of your bust are in the image. What this does is to ensure that the eye sight is straight, not up, nor down. You wouldn't like to be perceived as lacking confidence or, on the flip side, as arrogant. Would you?
- Do your best to look into the camera during the entire recording.
- Be relaxed.
- Avoid sending an image of despair. Most people enjoy spending time and hiring people who can keep their composure. Remember that the human factor plays an incredibly important role. And non-verbal communication matters a lot!
- Imagine talking to your best friend - this will help with the relaxed state of mind.
- Do your best to keep the material shorter than 3 minutes, while encompassing the most important details.
If you need additional support, ask a friend to have a video call with you, playing the recruiter. They should ask you, in a warm tone of voice, to showcase your skills. As a result of having your acquaintance with you and their warm voice, you should be able to showcase your skills in a friendly yet confident manner. While doing recording, make sure you use a software that allows the recording to be made in turns. That is, each speaker takes the full screen when they talk. In this way, the editing part (as the final result should only present you - the job seeker) will take less time. It will be easy to cut only the part you need.
Publish your skills showcasing video
Choose the platform you want to showcase your skills on. Wisely!
Then, upload your video and accompany it by a text. You can use a title/ hashtag such as "job seeker Skills showcase" to draw attention to your post. In the body of the post, write a few ideas from the video, but don't give everything away. The best you can do is to drive the curiosity factor in the reader. Consequently, the employer will want to discover what is it about you and what are the skills you are bringing to the table. At the end of your post, don't forget to show gratitude for the time people spend on watching your video. Gratitude yields incredible results!
I trust that you will make the best out of the information provided in this article. Remember to breathe, be relaxed and be confident (without being arrogant).
I would love to learn if my suggestion of showcasing your skills in a video helped you in any way.
