Leadership is Living Life On Your Own Terms with Claudine Adeyemi
Making a positive contribution to the world is a laudable ambition. Trying to better the lives of others is one of the best ways to discover happiness, fulfilment, a sense of purpose, and a sense of belonging. However, this can be a daunting goal: how can you, as a single person, improve the lives of other? Thinking about that question may make you feel insignificant and powerless, but a successful black woman, despite still suffering from self-doubt, has actual recommendations on how you can begin to positively affect others. Claudine Adeyemi is my guest on this edition of the Everyday Leadership Podcast. She is a multi-award winning lawyer and the Founder and CEO of CareerEar. She is also a Trustee for the Employers Network for Equality and Inclusion, and an in-house counsel at Wefarm.
We talked about the many hats she wears, how she copes with all of them, engaging in multiple jobs yet remaining focused, the importance of a portfolio career, whether to look for a sponsor or a mentor for growth, dealing with imposter syndrome, navigating the tech space as a black woman, and, of course, what leadership means to her.

“I personally believe that you can do multiple things but within each of those things be focused🎯 and be great at one thing. So to give an example, I run CareerEar and we’re a tech business and there are things that we are trying to achieve, but I am not within that business doing the tech as well as doing the BD as well as doing the marketing… there are ways of structuring it so that you are understanding the skills that you have, the interest that you have, the things you are passionate about, and the high leverage activity that you can do within each of those areas means that you are able to still excel across those different areas.”

“I think there are different types of leaders. But I think ultimately as a leader, you want to be in a position where you are inspiring others partly to join you in your journey and… to help them and empower them to be the best versions of themselves and to fulfil that potential.”

“I do believe that everything happens for a reason… If it was meant to happen it would have done and that’s not to say I just sit back waiting for things to happen, but I just believe that where things don’t quite work out then there would be another way, there will be another opportunity. I also don’t have time to be moping around.”

“...it’s obviously even worse with black women. And I think part of the issue on a day-to-day basis is just knowing that it’s not even necessarily going on and having to pitch but it’s doing all of that, doing all of that work, doing all of the outreach, building all the relationships, entering all of the pitch competitions, doing all of that stuff, knowing that statistically, you’re likely to fail.”

“I think they both have their place but if your key aim is to progress up the ranks to a certain position in your company, go get yourself a sponsor... A mentor will help you to think about it from the abstract in terms of how to start developing your association skills, how to build relationships with senior people and all that kind of thing… But ultimately, your ability to do all of those things means nothing if you don’t have the opportunity and you’re going to get the opportunity if you have the right sponsor so that’s where I advocate for sponsorship… that’s not to say you should have sponsors and never have any mentors.”
This session with Claudine was all shades of realness as she put forward a practical approach to how she lives her life.
