Making the Grade in the Video Games Industry
The UK video games industry relies on highly skilled and creative developers – the very people who are progressing from schools, colleges and typically graduating from universities each year. At the TIGA Best Practice in Games Education Conference on 15th February 2022, it was fascinating to hear informative discussions about what employers need from people entering the video game industry, as well as speakers from award winning universities about how they are ensuring that their students are well-educated in terms of technical and softer skills.
Education and industry joined together in offering lots of great advice. Emma Smith from Creative Assembly stressed the importance for students and graduates to develop communication skills, resilience and the ability to take and provide feedback. Representatives from Rebellion emphasised the importance of learning C++ and debugging skills, while Payload Studios noted how important it is for graduates to ensure that their portfolios properly reflect three years of work.
Speakers from education explained during the Conference how they are working hard to ensure students are well equipped with the skills needed to work in the games industry. Some education providers are simulating industry environments, encouraging students to confidently showcase their work online and in real life and securing guest speakers from industry. The best colleges, universities and studios are working together to drive our video games industry forward. 2yI couldn’t agree more, and utterly proud to be part of the huge Games and Visual FX team here at Staffordshire University. Working closely with industry, knowing their needs, helps us construct the best possible courses we can, ensuring our graduates are industry ready is extremely important. And having this accredited by TIGA for many of our courses (all in the near future), recognition for the work Staffordshire University do with industry as an educational institution is the cherry on the cake. I am #ProudToBeStaffs!
