Meet the New Longevity Gene

Meet the New Longevity Gene

Engaging in a healthy lifestyle that incorporates physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well-being practices undeniably enhances vibrant longevity as we age.

Genetics also play a role, both hereditary (thanks, Mom and Dad!), to proteins common to numerous species, including Homo sapiens.

Now, a team of researchers from the Center for Healthy Aging, Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine at the University of Copenhagen believe they have made a breakthrough in identifying a longevity gene. According to their published study, they have discovered that a protein, OSER1, exerts significant influence on longevity.

"We identified this protein that can extend longevity. It is a novel pro-longevity factor and a protein that exists in various animals, including humans," described senior author Professor Lene Juel Rasmussen.

To get a bit technical, the researchers discovered OSER1 when they studied a larger group of proteins regulated by the major transcription factor FOXO, known as a longevity regulatory hub. "We found 10 genes that, when we manipulated their expression, longevity changed. We decided to focus on one of these genes that affected longevity most, called the OSER1 gene," stated first author Zhiquan Li.

When a gene is associated with shorter a life span, the risk of premature aging and age-associated diseases becomes greater. Therefore, knowledge of how OSER1 functions in the cells and preclinical animal models is vital to our overall knowledge of human aging and human health in general.

“This study is the first to demonstrate that OSER1 is a significant regulator of aging and longevity. In the future, we hope to provide insights into the specific age-related diseases and aging processes that OSER1 influences," says Zhiquan Li.

In their conclusion, the team writes, “In summary, OSER1 is an evolutionarily conserved FOXO-regulated protein that improves resistance to oxidative stress, maintains mitochondrial functional integrity, and increases lifespan in multiple species. Additional studies will clarify the role of OSER1 as a critical effector of healthy aging.”

Li added that the team believes that future investigations into the characterization of OSER1 may provide opportunities for the development of pharmaceuticals for age-related diseases such as metabolic diseases, cardiovascular and neuro degenerative diseases.

The Supplement Front Line

Dietary supplements are a large part of ensuring every day is experienced with optimal health and well-being. Supplements that address common issues such as high stress, poor sleep, inflammation-induced discomfort, lack of vital energy, and stable immune function should be the front-line defense for consumers. Here’s why:

Extended periods of high stress are known to contribute to greater risk of adverse cardiovascular events. Solution:  Prolanza™ ashwagandha root extract (also known as ashwanova™  in some markets). This sustained-release ashwagandha is clinically validated to provide all-day stress management by reducing cortisol levels.

Frequent nights of insufficient sleep (which also raises stress levels) contribute to greater risk of accidents and also impact immune function. Solution:  Melotime™ extended release is calibrated to ensure melatonin is released throughout 8 hours, improving the ability to sleep better.

Chronic low-grade inflammation increases overall aches and also impacts immune function. Solution: TurmXTRA®60N is a one-and-done clinically validated turmeric that works effectively in low doses to protect joint and muscle health by mitigating inflammatory response.

Poor sleep can sap energy the next day, and stress exacerbates the sluggish feeling. Solution: CaffXtend®, a 100% natural caffeine supplement that provides extended energy throughout the 12-hour day when most stuff happens (work, school, appointments, errands, and after hours).

Optimal immune function can be compromised, leaving one vulnerable to feeling burnt out, overwhelmed and tired – which could lead to congestion, sore throat and sneezing. Solution: C-Fence is a single-dose, 24-hour optimized vitamin C. Vitamin C is the “go to” vitamin to protect immune function. Vitamin C also does a lot more – it is a key antioxidant and is needed for growth and repair of tissues, among other actions.

There’s an astounding body of work exploring what constitutes healthy longevity and what affects aging, as well as what contributes to accelerated aging and physical deterioration. There is also a growing cache of human studies showing how specific dietary supplements can nourish and protect the body, slowing down the aging process of cells. This is a fascinating area that is attracting more experts worldwide and validates the efforts and commitment of supplement ingredient innovators such as Nutriventia.

We can’t turn back the clock, nor can we slow time. But we can take agency of our health and well-being, and choosing to consume supplements is just one proven way of optimizing wellness.
