The messiness of Life

The messiness of Life

This is a picture of some of our internal team.

When I look at this picture I feel proud. These are strong individuals that have our back.

But I don’t want to paint a perfect picture. Far from it. When I look at these faces I also think of the things that we have been through together.

  • Sickness and even death of loved ones
  • The fear and uncertainty of pandemic
  • Launch of side businesses (from selling perfume, jumping castles to internet cafes)
  • Moving house…and then moving house again
  • Mistakes (both personally and professionally)
  • Internet outages (in the Philippines and Australia)
  • Typhoons, bushfires and floods
  • Burglaries
  • Headaches (literally and figuratively)
  • Fights with spouses
  • Interfering (but well meaning) mothers

And so much more.

Sometimes when these things happen a team member does not function at 100%.

They need some space, some flexibility. They might just need the afternoon off to take their Mum to the airport.

And in the short term, it might seem like a loss to your business but I reckon it is this shared journey through hardships can be a HUGE opportunity to build a team.

I know these people. They are on our team. They have our back. They feel connected to Global Teams. I feel connected to them.

Will they stay forever? Maybe not. (And we celebrate people who are moving on to great opportunities).

But while they are here they put in that discretionary effort that is so valuable to our business. They:

  • Share their ideas on how to improve the business
  • Band together as a team to work through challenges
  • Be flexible and take on new roles and projects to meet the business needs
  • Document and review processes to identify opportunities
  • Put that extra push in to meet a tight deadline

And THAT is gold!

If you are looking simply to “outsource’’ your work then that is one approach. But I reckon the most leveraged (albeit a bit messy) approach is to grow a team.

As Oprah said “Surround yourself with people that are going to lift you higher’’. And if she says it, it must be true.

P.S. Some people are keen on exploring getting support from us to grow their teams. If you would like to see if we are a good fit for you, just send me a message and the lovely Jonathan (VA) will organise a time for us to have a conversation.
