Mind over Mayhem!
Welcome back !!!
As we celebrate World Mental Health Day on 10 October 2023, this edition of Let’s Get Talking discusses the challenges of managing the complex web of thoughts and emotions we experience every day.
Dive in to know how we can prioritize our mental health over the mayhem, through a micro-blog, a well-being quote, and a very interesting podcast.
Did you know? We experience over 60,000 thoughts every single day!! These thoughts come so fast and weave into such a complex web that most of us struggle to untangle or navigate them. It is literally mayhem in our brains! But how do we deal with this mayhem? Let’s see a few examples.
Workplace mayhem
You have tight deadlines lined up and yet you find yourself occupied in meetings. Whatever time you get between the meetings, your brain is too scattered to focus or people keep interrupting you while you are in the zone! This can cause stress, missed deadlines, and lower quality of work.
What can you do? You may be having too many meetings and distractions during work time. Solution? Talk to your manager about your capacity and prioritize the tasks at hand. Consider using focus techniques like Pomodoro and establish boundaries on when you can be approached.
Relationship mayhem
Your partner is angry at you, and you don’t know why. You try to talk, but it only leads to more anger. This can leave you feeling misunderstood and angry yourself.
What can you do? Instead of getting angry in response, talk kindly and openly with your partner about the communication gap. Convey to them you are not receiving enough information to understand and help them. Ask them if there is anything that you can do to help them communicate better. Make sure that your approach is to solve the problem and not to point fingers.

Personal mayhem
You feel you are stuck in life and don’t know how to move forward. Without a sense of direction, you feel stressed and anxious. You see other people who are moving forward and it is affecting your confidence and self-esteem.
What can you do? Start by reflecting on where you are stuck and where you want to be in 5 or 10 years. Think about what skills, education, and experiences you need to get there. Break that goal down into smaller, achievable goals and take steps to reach them every day. If these attempts are not helping, consider getting a mentor or going for counselling. Also, remember that there is more to things than your eyes can see - people’s lives are not what they seem and everyone is on a different path.
These are just a few examples of how to detangle the thought web and take action to overcome our challenges. The key is to not let your thoughts guide you and instead ask the right questions to guide your thoughts.
You have it in you to tackle the mayhem!
