Need to be Rescued From Your Sunday Scaries?

If you read last week’s Sunday Scaries email (thank you) closely enough, you know I hid a little Easter egg in there teasing this week’s list of tips and the story that inspired it. I know you’ve been sitting in suspense all week, so here you go!

🚲 The Ride to Remember that was our group mountain biking trip to Moab last weekend…well, it was a mix of fun, challenge, a few tears, some wisdom gained, and an epic off-road adventure for at least part of the crew.

PS: No humans, egos, or bikes were harmed in the making of this email.

1. Know Your Limits—and Love Them

The eight of us who went on this trip set out together to ride Mag 7, the Magnificent 7 - a collection of seven trails that make up one of Moab’s iconic mountain bike routes.

The Moab trails are no joke, and knowing when to say "nope" is important, which is why half of the group, including me, took the less extreme route. One of the interesting things about learning to mountain bike, especially as a middle-aged woman (I just cringed at that reality 😖), is that I have no ego.

I know my limits and when I can safely push them and I am not afraid to take the scenic route (or hike-a-bike) when I know it’s the right thing to do.

So, while I’m telling you to know your limits, Jim and three of his friends decided to challenge theirs by continuing a ruthless climb via Gold Bar Rim to an infamous downhill trail called Portal.

Google it if you dare.

At least, that was the plan…speaking of plans…

2. The Best-Laid Plans...

Ah, preparation—essential but not always foolproof.

It was hotter than expected (and than it should be in early October in the desert), so we hit the trails early, fully equipped with all the essentials - water, snacks, and electrolytes.

All of us, including Jim did everything right that day. We ate well and hydrated often, but nature can laugh at our plans sometimes, even for the most prepared, well-conditioned athletes.

And that is exactly what happened.

Jim is an incredible athlete; he’s known for being the fastest one up a hill with endurance that even I don’t understand after 15+ years of observing it, which is why a paralyzing bout of heat exhaustion took all of us by surprise.

After the two groups had split, and the “let’s get rowdy” crew continued their ascent, Jim started experiencing freak cramps that eventually left him unable to move.

He literally laid face-down in the sand for two hours, which I didn’t fully appreciate until I saw this picture.

Don’t worry, I laughed as soon as I saw it too. 😆

The Lesson: Even the most prepared among us can be humbled by unexpected challenges.

3. Asking for Help is Hardcore

Vulnerability is not a weakness; some think it may even be a superpower. But in this case, Jim had no choice.

He and the friends with him had waited about an hour and a half to see if the condition improved, but they eventually made the call - there was no way he could get himself out of this situation on his own two feet.

No amount of water or HEED electrolytes was going to help him snap back into it, especially considering a fairly harrowing bike-walk out.

The only option was a call to search and rescue.

The Lesson: Sometimes, you just have to ask for the dang help, ok!?

4. Every Specialist Has Their Day

You’re getting most of this story via the account from Jim and our friend Scott, who so graciously stayed with Jim for 3+ hours while they waited for SAR (search and rescue) to arrive. Between their narrative and the pictures, I was able to construct a pretty good synopsis of this surreal event, including the 7+ professionals who came to the rescue.

Seven people - for one guy!?

The wagon train that took them out was something to behold: a tricked-out Jeep where Jim rode in the front seat while hooked up to IV fluids; an offroad vehicle with a specialty rack to extract the bikes, and a third offroad vehicle for the companion.

Hats off to these guys - the unsung heroes who make their living keeping adventurous souls like us safe.

The Lesson: You can have a thriving career and an amazing life, on your terms. 😉

5. Detours Are Cool

I joked with Jim, once I knew he was ok, that if he wanted to take an epic AWD trip, all he had to do was say so because his first words upon arrival at the pick-up location (after “Sooooory”) were:

“Ok, that was so cool!”

Once Jim and Scott had been picked up by this highly-specialized crew, they still had to exit the very remote place where they had stopped. Apparently, according to Jim's Q&A during the ride out, they couldn’t have been in a more difficult or farther location to be reached.

Of course.

But that also meant they got one hell of a ride out via one of the world’s most famous 4WD trails- the Poison Spider Mesa.

I’m not sure I could handle this ride in the daytime, let alone with IVs hanging from me, but it was a little bit of a silver lining for these guys. At one point, Jim said the terrain they were driving on was so steep, that he was hanging completely forward with the seatbelt as his only resistance. 😲

The Lesson: Things may not work out the way you expect, but winning can take many forms.

6. Your Vibe Attracts Your Tribe

Meanwhile, back at camp….

I hope you realize that while Jim was getting his white-glove trailside assistance, I was wondering what the heck was going on.

Spotty cell service and delayed communications meant I had only half the story for quite a long time, and even once I knew they’d get out generally unscathed, we still had to wait out the aforementioned three-hour off-road extraction ride.

Picking your husband up at 9 pm after a ride that began at 8 am is always interesting, and I’m grateful to have been surrounded by friends who are solid in emergencies, understand the backcountry, and most importantly, can support a girl through an intense few hours.

The Lesson: Never Go It Alone.

7. Embrace the Unexpected Adventures

All in all, Jim is fine, and despite the drama, Jim ended his day with a sunset rock crawl in a tricked-out Jeep, and I had a (now that we know he’s ok) fun story to tell.

Shall we thank Jim for this edition of Combatting the Sunday Scaries? 🤣

Perspective is everything. As a group, we somehow turned this tough situation into an epic experience none of us will forget.

Life’s like that—full of unexpected detours that can lead to the most memorable moments if you allow it.

The Lesson: Roll with the punches. When plans change, go with the flow and find joy in that new direction. You never know what epic tale you’ll end up being able to share!

Here’s to a week of amazing adventures!
