A night of optimism – Business leaders gather at the Belvedere in Warsaw for Tech discussion
Ewa Kurowska-Tober , partner and head of IPT at DLA Piper Poland and global co-chair of data protection, privacy and security, along with Mark O'Conor , partner and global co-chair of the technology sector at DLA Piper , hosted the “Elite Roundtable Dinner | Tech Index” at the famous Belvedere Restaurant in Warsaw on the evening of 6 December. The gathering was an occasion to celebrate the launch of DLA Piper ’s Tech Index 2022 report.
Tech Index Report
The Tech Index 2022 is DLA Piper ’s preeminent industry report exploring the perceptions and attitudes of technology and related issues and trends, across Europe (and beyond), and is backed by data from interviews with senior executives from more than 350 companies. It includes market perspectives around a range of themes including sustainability, Internet of Things, 5G, Fintech, AI, Digital Transformation and much more.

Networking and tech-driven discussions
The evening was an opportunity to network and to share the findings of the report amongst senior business leaders in an exclusive venue.
Ewa Kurowska-Tober opened the dinner by noting that, “the Tech Index touches all sectors, and that’s why it is important to gather feedback and generate conversation among players on domestic and international markets.”
DLA Piper has hosted similar events in Singapore, Stockholm and Amsterdam, with another event coming in London.
The report was the general theme of the evening and discussions with attended guests who represented miscellaneous sectors covered:
➡️ AI and its future regulation
➡️ Green Tech/ESG
➡️ Geopolitical issues in Tech

➡️ Tech M&A
Regulation, a boon or burden?
The Tech Index shows confidence in the tech sector despite the current economic, geopolitical and regulatory pressure. However, the feeling of optimistic is not universal when it comes to certain aspects. This was the case in discussions during the dinner regarding regulation.
Although respondents to the Tech Index expressed growing confidence in national and European regulatory regimes, some attendees stated that, in their field, regulations are perceived as ‘business-stoppers’. This perception is a particular pain point in B2C companies where the ability to remain agile, adapting on the fly to consumer desires, is necessary to stay competitive.
Conversely, as found in the Tech Index report, some companies have seen the increased regulatory environment as a boon. Noting consumers’ increased awareness of data privacy issues, a strategy is appearing where companies are incorporating ‘ethics by design’ into their sales propositions. For example, one global pharmaceutical company very clearly shows on their website how personal data is used.
Another example is that of a major European bank which has recently acquired an application that will trace the carbon footprint of all financial transactions. This decision was motivated by ESG, but also by the consumers, and in the end, both the bank and the app users are the beneficiaries.
“Since the introduction of GDPR in 2018, companies have faced a tsunami of regulation. We’ve seen huge data-privacy-driven policy shifts,” says Mark O'Conor .
“Consumers will choose the companies and products which are more ethical or more trustworthy. That’s why it’s important to keep in mind regulations – they are not abstract, they are really connected with the customer journey,” says Ewa Kurowska-Tober .
What to look out for next - trends over the next 18 months
At the Elite Roundtable Dinner, cybersecurity, data management, personal data, business resilience, AI, and ESG were highlighted as the hot trends over the next 18 months.
“Massive regulatory framework is coming, and now it’s all about building a proper risk approach,” says Ewa Kurowska-Tober . “ DLA Piper is acting as a business advisor on these topics, not strictly on legal, to ensure our clients, across all sectors, are confident in all areas.”
“Nowadays, DLA Piper is working with clients to ‘get ahead of the curve’ and be ready for what coming in two years’ time,” Mark O'Conor adds. “We have this sort of ‘cupboard’ of proven solutions - almost ready-made policies on data privacy, AI, GDPR, and more, that we can fine tune to clients’ needs.”
