Ode to an Employee Lost

Ode to an Employee Lost

Today a good man lost his battle with a bottle; through his life he had been a son; a friend; a soldier; and to me his was an employee under my care; he was given support, love and a pathway to hope; but bottles and booze offer an immediate escape, a supposed easy way out.

Our society is more and more offering individuals an easy choice; a way to escape pain; hurt; effort, but the easy choices always come with hard consequences and only hard choices will lead to easy life.

As a business owner; manager; or parent; you are ultimately; a leader; and leaders have a single responsibility, to care for those who would follow you. To help them develop and grow so that they can make the hard decisions... so that they can have an easier and more fulfilling life.

I was a young manager when this good man was under my care; I could have made an easy decision to let him go without any chances; instead we offered help; counselling, AA, working with his family, even driving him to rehab, love and support as we would a friend or family member; ultimately; 9 years later his lost his battle, but I like to think that the steps we took, ultimately supported him in a few more years with his family and friends.

Today; I ask you to look around you; look at the people in your care; seek out those who need help; you may not win every battle, you may lose; but you will make a difference; at it may mean everything to a father; mother; child or partner.

In respect of this man, I make two pledges; #30daysalcoholfree #30daysareyouok? Here to listen...

Much love to you all 💛💚💙💜❤️🧡

Am sorry to hear. I agree, it's so easy to focus on someone's output at work and forget their daily battle.

Hi Lauren, Leadership comes in many forms - more often on LinkedIn and other forums I read about the technical side of leadership development, which is okay. It is so refreshing to read something that has a human side. Thanks so much for sharing and caring.
