One of the Most Toxic Phrases in the World

One of the Most Toxic Phrases in the World

Here's one of THE most toxic sentence starters in the universe:

"I'll do it when"

Let me tell you why it's so dangerous:

Just this week I've been having a back and forth with a potential client.

He's in the dilemma of weighing whether to go after his "passion" now or if he should work full-time for another five years.

Ultimately it seems he's deciding to "tough it out" and then go after what he wants when he's got the money.

His priority is being financially solvent right now (which is fine).

However, I strongly disagree with his timing and this is exactly what I said:

"I completely understand this. And I would 100% encourage you to do exactly what you have to do from a financial perspective.

I would NEVER suggest someone walk away from something without a plan nor would I ever lean towards digging into a nest egg.

But here's where we differ and it's significant.

You wrote THIS to me:

"Something to build on when I walk away from the job."

But who's to say that will happen? That's a very dangerous mode of thinking. That's like saying "I'll do this when......."

And that could lead to you being trapped never going after what you reached out to me in the first place to help you with.

"Start building NOW" is where your mind needs to shift to.

Your window makes complete sense. Fill that gap, make the income. Do what you have to do.

But to WAIT is where I strongly disagree.

Why not have a job to support you but work on something for 1-2 hrs a day that takes say a year or two to really get off the ground?

Make an informed and strategic decision to walk away on YOUR terms.

Have money coming in from the side project. while you are working full time.

That's my two cents. The more you put this off, the more likely it won't even begin."

Agree? Disagree?

Fully AGREE, Nat! But would you go for a side project on the same line as your work or more as an alternative path to it in the middle or long term, depending on when you can switch tracks (and become "retired" as you define it in another article?).

- Totally agree Nat Berman. - The future is uncertain. - If there's something you want to do, the important thing is to start it as soon as possible. - While you have the income to support you.
