The Parade of the Dead

As we approach Armistice Day, even as we are threatened with a partial unravelling of the institutions that have given us the longest period of peace in Europe since Roman times (Yugoslav conflict excepted of course), here's another statistic worth considering.

Imagine that all the dead, civilian and military, of World War Two, took part in a parade down Whitehall past the Cenotaph. Say they parade in single file, 4 feet apart, and march at 3 mph, 5 kph. How long would the parade be?

If they marched for 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, the parade of these 80 million dead would take some 6 years, 10 months. Just a bit longer than World War two actually took to fight.

Hoping the new European peace makes it to 100 and beyond,
