PIPs, Emergency Savings as an Employer Benefit & AI Cheat Sheet

Weekly Round-Up

The Truth About Performance Improvement Plans (PIPs)

Performance Improvement Plans, or PIPs, are formal documents that are supposed to be used by employers to help employees improve their job performance.

But those of us who have worked in HR or have been people managers know that PIPs almost always result in your being fired or quitting.

I came across a Twitter thread by Ethan Evans on PIPs that breaks down the psychology that tends to lead to separation from an employer.

Check out the full thread by clicking here.

So, if you are on a PIP or think your boss might put you on one, you might want to tighten up that resume and warm up those connections.

Emergency Savings Accounts as a Job Benefit?

Would you take your employer up on an emergency savings account as a job benefit?

According to the 2023 Workplace Wellness Survey by the Employee Benefit Research Institute , employees report that building savings for an emergency is just as stressful — if not more stressful — than saving for retirement.

According to research from the Bipartisan Policy Center , about 42% of employees want to be automatically enrolled in an emergency savings account through their employer. However, according to human resources consulting firm Buck, just 10% of employers offered these benefits in 2022.

New legislation called Secure 2.0 will give employers more flexibility in offering emergency savings accounts as part of their benefits package.

Google Apprenticeships

Are you interested in transitioning your career but know you need to develop the skill set necessary to make the leap?

Well, Google has apprenticeships that may be able to help!

For those of you who aren't aware, apprenticeships are programs that provide you with the training and exposure you need to develop your professional skills on the job.

The good part about these apprenticeships? They are PAID!

Here are the eligibility requirements:

  • Strong academic performance at any level of education or transferable experience.
  • Ability to speak and write in English and/or the local language fluently and idiomatically, depending on the track.
  • Have authorization to work in the country where you are applying.

Alternative Job Search Sites

Where do you search for your jobs?

If you said LinkedIn, Indeed, or Glassdoor, then you might be getting caught up with tons of applicants.

Each of my past newsletters has had at least 5 alternative sites for you to consider using; here are 5 more that vary in use:

  1. ExecThread - confidential and recruiter-led searches for thousands of executive-level jobs.
  2. Conservation Job Board - the world's largest career website for conservation, ecology, forestry, wildlife, and fisheries jobs.
  3. Fitt Jobs - curated health, fitness, and wellness careers.
  4. Bus Stop Mamas - flexible job opportunities for moms.
  5. Work in Sports - the employment hub of the sports industry.

Career Tools

Have you ever heard of LinkedIn 's Opportunity Hub?

No? I did not know either until Andrew McCaskill mentioned it in his How to Get What You Deserve at Work live (which you should definitely check out).

The hub has resources to help you discover new career paths, learn relevant skills, find in-demand jobs, and stand out to recruiters.

You can take classes on LinkedIn for Learning , which has partnered with Microsoft Learn and GitHub Learning Lab to further your skill set and practice those skills.

They have a Career Explorer tool that analyzes your background and provides you with potential career paths that align with your transferable skills.

Lastly, they have an AI-powered tool that helps you practice your interviewing!
