Asking for a Raise at Work

No doubt, many professionals aren't being paid their worth at work. But, when I ask professionals why they deserve a raise, I'm typically met with personal issues and anecdotes about why they want a raise. Let's cut the BS, companies don't care that you have bills to pay, everything is expensive, you've been at the company forever, or you think you should be paid more. You have to make the case as to why they should give you more money.

Talk about it early and often

Your first time speaking with your leadership about a raise shouldn't be at your performance review. Put the bug in their ear early on. I suggest you tell them in a one-on-one meeting that you would love to work towards getting a raise and that you want to know what they consider necessary to make that happen. Then, work towards those things and update your leader regularly.

Assess your market value and performance

You need to level set by looking at benchmarking data to identify what you should be getting paid.

Gather data on what professionals with your experience, education, and skillset are earning, not just in your industry, but in your location.

Here are a couple of resources:

  1. Bureau of Labor Statistics
  2. Salary
  3. Glassdoor
  4. Comparably

Document Your Value

Remember, your task is to build a compelling case for why the company should give you more money. The most effective way to do this is by documenting how you've made an impact or created value.

Document additional responsibilities, new skills, and [most importantly] your results, capacity, or achievements. Consider:

  1. Performance metrics you are measured on (sales, number of new customers, impressions, retention rates, turnover, etc.)
  2. Capacity data, such as the number of direct reports, the number of projects you worked on, the size of the cross-functional teams you've lead, the dollar value of the budget you manage, etc.

Your annual performance reviews can be a good source of this information. REMEMBER to quantify wherever you can. Numbers make an impression.

Consider your timing

Is your company doing well financially? Asking for a raise during a period of layoffs or budget cuts might not be the best strategy.

Have there been recent company-wide raises or bonuses? If so, this might affect your leverage in the negotiation because the company may believe they already addressed compensation needs.

Keep it professional

Don't compare yourself to coworkers unless salary data is openly available and you've considered that coworker's background, skills, and years of experience.

Don't cite personal financial needs, and avoid coming off as entitled with phrases like "I deserve" or "I'm overdue".

Frame this as a routine discussion instead of an uncomfortable request.

Position Yourself for a Promotion

  1. Gain new skills & hone old skills - Stay relevant and ready for new challenges by continuously learning and improving.
  2. Find a sponsor - A sponsor advocates for your career advancement within the company, while a mentor provides guidance and advice. Seek out a senior leader who understands your work and can champion you for promotion opportunities.
  3. Expand your network in the company - Build relationships with colleagues across different departments through Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) and even casual social events.
  4. Seek stretch assignments - Volunteer for challenging projects outside your comfort zone to demonstrate your ability to take on greater responsibility.
  5. Make yourself invaluable to your boss - Be the reliable, go-to person who consistently delivers high-quality work, anticipates their needs, and proactively tackles challenges. Make their lives easier.

Stop Being Afraid of AI

I want you to learn how to utilize AI to your advantage in your job search and career.

In previous newsletters, I shared 4 AI systems you could use: ChatGPT, Gemini AI, Perplexity, and HIX.

In every newsletter, I will share a new prompt you can try in AI systems to help you out! So far, we've covered prompts to identify keywords and phrases and get feedback on your resume.

Here's a prompt that can help you get started on writing a tailored cover letter for a particular job:

You are an executive resume writer. I am going to provide you with a job description and a resume. I want you to write a tailored cover letter that showcases how the candidate meets the requirements of the role listed in the job description. Use language from the job description. Do not copy verbatim from the resume content; reword or rework the information.

Copy and paste in the job description and your resume, then hit enter and let the system do its thing!

REMEMBER: AI should only be used as a thought partner, meaning you should never just copy and paste over something from AI. You will still need to customize it and make it sound like you.
