Power of the Mind

Power of the Mind

The most valuable asset available to us as entrepreneurs is not funding, customers or even our team. It is our ability to utilise our mind; the abstract set of cognitive faculties and mental processes housed in our brain.

I found as a young Manager and then CEO that it was easy to be trapped into the cycle of "continual decision-making" where I would respond to the incoming demands on my time as though I was a tennis player, answering each and then batting them back across the net.

But with age has come wisdom and today I greatly appreciate the ability to take time to consider my response to incoming opportunities and problems as they arise.

This approach requires commitment and a need to educate others that responses will not always be instant.

Providing myself with time to utilise my brain power allows me to

  1. Call on my creativity and be more innovative.
  2. Make better decisions and ones less likely to be affected by "gut feel" or unconscious bias.
  3. Protect my mental health and build my resilience.
  4. Be more productive by managing my time and resources better.
  5. Better consider who within my network is best positioned to help. Having built the network I have this is a critical step.

Why not try this technique today on the first incoming query you receive?

1. Fight the desire to multi-task

Trust me, we can only perform one task at a time well. Switch off all the distractions, social media threads, project apps, email, instant messengers, etc and practise the power of concentration.

2. Remain focused

We all get distracted. The trick for me is to recognise when my mind is wandering and to bring it back to the subject at hand. Over time and with practice you will get better at this.

3. "𝑷𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒔𝒖𝒓𝒆 𝒑𝒖𝒔𝒉𝒊𝒏' 𝒅𝒐𝒘𝒏 𝒐𝒏 𝒎𝒆"

Don't allow others to take up real estate in your mind!

LinkedIn Hints & Tips

It's been great to receive such marvellous feedback on the ideas I've been able to share on how I use LinkedIn.

LinkedIn is very much a "matching" platform where we reach out to connect with those whom we believe we can help.

To create a match there has to be a "connection" something we have in common.

It could be a common job, industry, location, or school but trust me people will only act on this connection request if your profile looks professional, logical and appealing.

But how can we best do this?

The easy answer is to simply share your profile with a dozen friends and ask them to make suggestions on how you can improve it.

Thank them for the feedback and implement what makes sense for you

And one other thing. Invest in a professional headshot. It's not expensive but I suggest today it is essential.

The Week Ahead

I start the week in London where I will be attending Government Transformation Week to promote the tremendous activity in this sector in Scotland. We have both CivTech Scotland and CENSIS companies participating.

Next, I'm in Vienna speaking at the Wolves Summit where I have the opportunity to meet with some of the leading entrepreneurs in Central Europe. I love this event as they always deliver new opportunities, especially for partnerships with companies looking to break into the UK market.

I end the week in Alicante where we have a family break planned around the running of the Alicante Half Marathon. With the full horror of the floods in Valencia still filling our screens this is certain to be an emotional day for all involved.

Glad to read your thoughts. To fall into rut of focusing on a goal profits team building presentation or one’s own ambition/aspiration must nevertheless always encourage lateral thoughts stand back be courageous where applicable
