The Purpose Principles

It is hard to talk about Oprah presentation at the ATD.  Really. This lady was so real, following no script, but yet, all that she said resonated so much, that i don't even know how to start.

But before I start with my key learnings, i might say that her presentation were those moments that you are just out of your comfort zone, that without realizing, you are inside your own mind, thinking about your own purpose in life and what the hell can you do to make a different in the world.  I was always a fan, but after this session, I became like devoted to her or something. :)

So back to the key messages because for sure you don't want to know how I was in love with this lady:

1) Be true to yourself;

She started her speech by saying how she was a truth seeker (how powerful is that!!!).  Not a seeker of other people’s truths, but more of her own truth and what is her role in this life.  She mentioned the The Purpose Principle, and described how EVERYTHING she does, in her life and how she handled her show for long time, was about a purpose: either to help others, to make a point towards injustices or simply by presenting different sides of very controversial stories such as gay marriage.

2) Trust your guts:

This could be kind of surprisingly for some, but for me, makes total sense.  How many time did you interviewed someone and you just knew that this person was not right for the job? (Or vice versa).We need to take this feeling seriously folks; We can feel when something doesn't goes right.  We just need to dare to speak forwards;

3) You need to focus on choosing the right leaders.

As much as you want to think that good leaders with follow you or will be easy to find, you can not negligent that.  You have to pick well those you will give responsibility for, specially when it’s about developing others (AKA always…).  She told us how her school project in Africa had a major crisis because of a very bad choice…

4) People are looking for validation.

Well, aren't we all???    We want to feel recognized and valued by our peers, our family: you name it.  But what comes in the bottom of this need of validation is the sense of: DO YOU SEE ME?  DO YOU HEAR ME? Do you see me as a human being, with my whole issues and emotions; So lets be honest with one another right now:  how many of us can actually say that they see their peers and colleagues?

5) Sense of Purpose

This last point made by oprah was the most important one for me: what is your intention towards an action?  What are you aiming to achieve? And most important: are you doing/ deciding something based on the intentions for yourself (your ego) or for a better purpose??

This is last one is a tough question right?  When should we start thinking about others before thinking about ourselves?

The truth is:  we are here to serve.  As leaders, human beings in general, we need to understand that our purpose in life is to serve other, the best way we can. We also need to realize that our ego sometimes can lead us to wrong decisions, and this could be dangerous. We are all looking to fulfill the gaps in our lives, to build a complete version of ourselves.

Let’s help each other!
