Do you remember your childhood?

I have a confession: I am fascinating about people; specially, why do we behave the way we do, and mainly, why it is so difficult to deal with differences. Perhaps because I was an outsider myself for a long time, understading what makes people behave in a certain way always brought me a little confort, bringing me closer I could get to empathy, and why not, compassion.

But this fascination lead to something even greater that is learning about everything that can, and will impact our behaviors inside and outside our company. And oh boy, a new world has oppened for me.

For instance, a few weeks ago I participated in a workshop with Tamara Erickson, expert in Leadership (5 times nomeneed as Thinkers50) and creator of the program « Leading Businesses into the Future ». Tammy did a research on how the events that happened to us when we were around 13/15 years old impacted directly the way we deal with people now a days, specially the way we relate to work.

According to her, the population today is devided into major groups by age, and each one of them has specific caracteristics due to each time period, that will drive the way they interact with work, money and family.

These are what she identified as the main impacts our age has in our work interactions:

  • The meaning of work
  • How people from each generation view time
  • Assumptions associated with relocation
  • Communication
  • Attitude towards authority
  • How they lead and find information
  • What means to have a great job
  • Relationship with parents
  • Meaning and purpose of feedback
  • The role of money
  • The Physical possessions

And if we dont take time to understand that and take a look into our back ground, that can lead to misunderstanding, frustations, lack of trust, lower productivity and limited inovations.

In the next text, I will share with you the activities we did, to put all this into practices, to see that, when we focus on understanding ourselves and each other, we build together a better work enviroment for all!

And the winner is... The Intern

This movie is about a retired man (Mr. De Niro) who applies for a intern job in a start up company. The film show very clearly this differents points of view based on generations, highlighting good and bad aspects of each people (in a very funny, light and lovable way!). But the main point is to show that if we allow ourselves to break our stereotypes, we can do greater things together!
