Push notifications vs emails

Push notifications vs emails

Email marketing has been around for a very long time, and on average there are 200 billion emails sent daily, from numerous companies. That statistic shows that email marketing is an extremely saturated technique and makes it difficult to stand out in a person's inbox.

Of course, it can still be a good technique, but it may not be as effective as it once was, especially with nearly half of those daily emails being spam.

In emails, you provide customers with a full-length, blog-like piece of content and give all the information needed but that doesn’t always result in people taking action. Whereas push notifications are more likely to entice people into your app or take further action; whether that be making a sale, signing up to become a member or reading the most recent report.

In 2009, Apple first introduced push notification technology with its iOS 3.0 version. Since then, push notification technology has progressed and can include action buttons, and media and also be personally tailored to individual users.

The benefits of push notifications have been extremely significant as it enables businesses to notify customers with offers, news and important information at any time, whether they have the app open or not.

So what are some of the benefits of push notifications?

  • Customers have control

Users/customers can opt in or out on whether they’d like to receive push notifications or not. But, recent statistics show that 60% of users do opt-in, which is great for businesses!

A problem with email marketing is that there isn’t much that customers can do to stop endless emails from being sent or from your email being used by third parties, etc. apart from unsubscribing altogether.

  • Instant delivery

Yes, for most people, emails are checked regularly. However, this does mean that as a business, you’re relying on customers to be checking their emails frequently to ensure your emails don’t get missed.

However, with push notifications, your news and offers are in front of the customers instantly. According to research, people are spending an average of 4 hours per day on their phones, so there’s a high chance that they’ll see that push notification pretty quickly! And even if they don’t see it instantly, it will remain on their lock screen until it’s either clicked on or cleared.

  • Simple

Push notifications are extremely simple. There’s no need for any fancy creatives, they simply need to show the information in one or two sentences, and then bam – it can be sent and in front of the customer straight away.

Grabbing a customer's attention via email is much more difficult and there are far more steps. You need to think of a catchy subject line (to encourage them to open the email in the first place!), write the copy, create the design, test it out and make any amends.

  • Higher click-through rates

As stated earlier, there’s an average of 200 billion emails sent daily making it incredibly hard to be spotted (that’s around 100 emails per day, per user).

For push notifications, it’s much easier to stand out due to this method being less crowded thus resulting in higher click-through rates.

Statistics say that emails have a click rate of 1-2% on average as opposed to an average click rate of 28% for push notifications.
