Regional media days at the House of Commons
The House of Commons media team often speak to journalists who cover the work of Parliament – whether they’re based in the UK or around the world.
Last month the team welcomed a group of regional journalists to Parliament to experience a day in Westminster. Emily Heaton , who coordinated the event, said:
“These regional media days provided an opportunity for the journalists, who cover the work of their MPs from afar, to see parliamentary proceedings in person – in many cases for the first time. They also heard from a range of experienced colleagues who work behind the scenes to make Parliament happen.”
Across the two days, attendees received briefings from some of Parliament’s senior clerks – who answered questions on procedure – alongside guided tours, a Westminster Hall Debate, and introductions to members of the Press Gallery, who work on the estate.
They also got a special invitation to sit in the press gallery where they observed PMQs, or saw their own MP speak in Urgent Questions.
Emily said: “We were pleased to hear that the attendees found this to be an informative and fascinating day. There’s nothing quite like seeing the place for yourself. We’ll certainly be facilitating further events just like it in the future.”
