HOW TO REVIEW YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA STRATEGY

HOW TO REVIEW YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA STRATEGY

Social media is overwhelming. We are constantly faced with new tools, features and ways of promoting ourselves online. This can lead to a number of things occurring. Some people may avoid social media, and put their head in the sand, become less motivated and less inspired to create in their business.

Others may suffer from overwhelm, and be less likely to have effective strategies. This can lead to inconsistency and losing visibility to potential clients.

Overall impacts can then occur; the small business might not make proper use of the platforms, and the profiles/businesses that they are supposed to be engaging with!

Business owners talk about these problems frequently to me.

Solopreneurs, freelancers and small business read on for help to review your social media strategy.

Some prep tips for carrying out a review:

  • Analyse your current strategy with someone who can offer fresh ideas, a different perspective
  • Make time for the review and quieten distractions wherever possible eg turn off social media notifications whilst reviewing (ironic, I know!)
  • Clear your mind and try not to compare in an emotional way – use the information to help you improve and gain clarity/motivation/energy!

Identify and review your current platforms

This might sound obvious, but do you really know what channels you are on and if they are active? Look online and check the activity and insights.

It’s a good idea to analyse where most of your leads come from, and whether you could utilise your other channels to encourage followers to follow your content there. This is important if you are a freelancer, or solopreneur as it’s hard being active on more than one platform. It’s very time consuming and realistically trying to be in two places at once leads to inconsistency and loss of visibility.

Finally, identify other channels that might be more useful than your current ones. You might find you are spending too much time on the wrong platform. I have seen this frequently with Facebook and LinkedIn, for example.

It is hard to be present on one channel and you can dilute your message jumping from platform to platform. One way of helping with this is to use scheduling software. Get in touch with me  here to find out about training for this.

Competitor analysis

Check out your competitors, you might not even be able to list them initially so make time to think about this. Research what platforms they are using and whether they are active.

It’s a good idea to see if your competitors are using a platform that you aren’t currently utilising and establish why you are not using this platform…

What is working for your competitors in terms of content? Look through the posts and see what their audience likes to consume, for example, how to’s or industry articles (how are these curated?) own articles, their journey/behind the scenes content.

Keep in mind that their audience could be extremely similar to yours if you are offering the same product or service. This is important information to consider.

Social media voice

Review your social media voice and tone! How are you talking to your audience through your content and copy – does it match your mission statement and vibe of your business?

Your social media voice needs to suit your audience. Like when you talk to your five year old nephew, then a colleague, then your partner – the type of language, tone, formality and so on change. Talking to your audience on social media is no different. You need a consistent voice and tone so the audience can relate and build a relationship with you/your brand.

Examples of voice:

Casual, informal, professional, accessible, supportive, entertaining

Examples of tone:

Honest, humble, sensitive, respectful, melancholy, grateful

Current Content

Review the content you have saved in your chosen scheduler software or in manual files. Read the copy and/or check if videos align to the social media voice that you intend. It might be a good time to re-write self-promotional posts and evergreen content.

Review the sources of your content as well to see if they align with your social media voice and mission. These include blogs, websites, articles, industry news, forums and so on. There could be new sources of content to use which have a different perspective and new ways of thinking for your audience.

Plus this is something that business owners do frequently – they add a new service or change the focus of their services, but don’t adapt the content to align with these changes.

Social media can fall down the to-do list but can have dire consequences on your business if this happens…

Check out these statistics, they are mind-blowing – in the UK there are currently 45 million social media users and this equals to 67% of the entire population! It is also interesting to note that 39 million of the social media users are accessing sites through mobile so it is ever more important to have sites and content optimised for mobile use!

I good article Jessica Jones this make perfect sense as if you think about it when you write content you switch everything off to write a blog or article. I also think looking at your competitors is a good idea and making comparisons it all helps with content!
