The Rise and Fall of #WFH... Impacting Outcomes at Home, Work, and Life As You Know It

I help busy professionals who are female executives, influencers and other leaders be stronger, make better decisions, have more balance, get more out of their day with superior wellness initiatives- and thrive.

IBM, in 2009 had 40% of its workforce, WFH (work from home). 2019, they were recalling those same employees back to the WP (workplace). Why? Stats revealed the environment of the WP increased productivity, innovation, and agility. Gallop agreed.

Then there was the #pandemic. People were locked down and WFH was born out of necessity to ensure companies kept moving forward, and for us, to keep up in a safe place until ‘they’ tried to figure it all out.  Everyone's lives, no exemptions, were turned upside down. Life as we knew it was laced with fear, uncertainty, and varying degrees of mis-/dis- and plain old information. Those already WFH claimed no learning curve.

It’s fair to say, after 20+ months, WFH isn’t going anywhere especially with some companies postponing returning to the WP, well into 2022. If you remember, this was only supposed to last 2-weeks.

Studies and stats are surfacing about WFH and that it’s taking a toll on physical health, and well-being according to Ivy Lui's article on the same topic.

How has your health been in the last 2 years?

You need your #health for “everything”- right? But for those whose life centered around the WP and are now relegated to WFH has presented unexpected health and well-being challenges.

Some companies are realizing that the slow return to the WP is accompanied by the 'other' problems Lui's article points to. They're waking up to a problem that is not going away. The ‘fix’ du jour includes time off, spa-like perks, a stand-up desk, larger monitors, and webinars, and more frills- band-aids for the obvious.

Nice, but the crux of the all-around problem isn’t being addressed,

Deeper problems loom for the WFH who seem to be more prone to mental wellness and other long-term health consequences. These problems may have been unbeknownst dormant in the personal environments, but with the added stresses, the cards played out sooner not later, taking their toll on mind, body, and soul. The uncertainty of the times at the beginning of the pandemic can’t be disputed. It is thought to contribute to a brew of- mistrust, awareness of unhealthy teams, and lack of confidence in leadership at the WP… What a mess.

Some companies, who realize people are human after all, are trying and taking strides to be more present emotionally, such as phone vs. zoom. These same companies are also looking into ‘other’ services, but not necessarily acting on them. It seems like a wait-and-see directive. This factors in when companies are going all out to retain talent and keep a competitive edge. The use of the 4- Relationships Basics: Acceptance, Appreciation, Acknowledgement and, Agreement goes a long way. Especially, in this day and time, with reported shortages in the workplace retention of personnel has never been so pivotal. Companies that do not pay attention risk losing and not even attracting the most talented.

What is eroding physical health, etc. is not the right question. These companies are missing- a boat; by not addressing the WHY and ROOT issues in the first place. If they want to motivate, get the WFH fired up, then- they are going to have to go #backtobasics, think out of the box, and finally, find the solution with- 'soul'utions.

In my opinion, they need to do better, they need a better plan.

#WFH has a specific list of relevant complaints that lead to taking a toll on their physical wellness. If you recognize any of these for yourself- you’re not alone. This list is only partial… there is a solution whether acquired by WFH or not. Read on…

TOP - PHYSICAL HEALTH COMPLAINTS/WFH:

1.    Depression/anxiety/exhaustion

2.    Sitting long periods in front of monitors

3.    Weight gain/over-indulging in comfort food/alcohol

4.    Lack of focus/concentration

5.    Hypertension/Gut issues

7.    Head/body – pains

8.   No exercise

The solution:

This is perplexing to me why some companies are skirting the issue(s) to do the right thing and address the core problem here, especially- when the solution(s) is very doable. #Focus on the WHY–not WHAT is eroding physical health for those WFH. And, companies wonder why they have high attrition rates… they are missing the basic principles regarding wellness: WHY? What is the ROOT? And- Back to Basic (B2B) Principle.

"You can’t motivate, or expect anyone to get fired up when someone is stuck in a health paradigm." Dr. Pat Boulogne

Even though companies need to do better, the solution and the ‘soulutions’ lay with both the company and the professional. Health is essential for everything. If we do not address the foundational cracks in one’s health, it will only perpetuate the problem. In the long run, the Back To Basic Principle. makes sense. I described is a win/win vs. the old method of shelling out new desks, screens, etc.

If ROI is a bottom line, then companies who support WFH health outcomes can expect to have WFH have more motivation, drive, creativity, and happiness. That is good for both parties. Investing in a growing range of the “right’ services is the correct next step needed to keep moving forward. Making self-care and health a priority for the WFH majority will result in realizing a more complete solution to the ‘health, physical, and well-being issues.

The caveat here is that some of these "health things” may need to be taught because they’re not in higher education systems. What is #health? The base definition in Webster Dictionary says it is a condition of wholeness to which the organs function 100% of the time. It isn’t merely the absence of disease or infirmities/World Health Organization. #Truth, no one know if the organs are functioning 100%, or not. That is why going back to basics and not putting the cart before the horse is foundational to keep moving forward. I know sounds simplistic, but for many people, this does not come easy, and they don't get it until they get into crises, like the one we are solving here.

That is why understanding 'all' The 5-Pillars of Health are important and foundational for back to basics approach if you want to be successful. They break down these above definitions into digestible teaching that results in thinking, feeling, and moving better coupled with becoming stronger than medicine teachings, also results in a happier, more resilient, and connected you. The big bonus is by taking an empowered approach you get your life back on track and regain control of outcomes at home and in the workplace.

Being stronger than medicine is a realized outcome of implementing the 5 - Pillars of Heath to resolve and solve this crisis created by WFH and how it's taking its toll on physical wellness. To really understand this, you must understand what health is or isn’t.

When looking at the big picture, if you just par lee those 4- Relationships Basics: Acceptance, Appreciation, Acknowledgement and, Agreement with The 5-Pillars of Health you stand a fighting chance of not only reestablishing good health by proper nutrition and diet, proper exercise, proper sleep, and proper mental mindset and proper posture… you have the ‘right’ system to reset, revive and restore function and be stronger, more balanced, make better decisions with a program that can be implemented within any company structure working in-home or the workplace and perhaps a lifetime.

This is what we call, a ‘win/win.

Humans are built for community.....not zoom meetings.

It’s not common sense anymore. Thanks Pat for bringing us back to the reality of our humanity.
