Sales Job - 3 Questions to Make Sure Its the Right "Fit!"

Sales Job - 3 Questions to Make Sure Its the Right "Fit!"

I have read quite a few posts and blogs recently regarding open sales positions. There are as many sales related positions and companies that are hiring as there are stars in the sky.

The question becomes, "How do you know that the company you are applying for is the right 'fit' for you?" The reason I ask this question is because I have been guilty of taking a position with an employer that wasn't a proper fit for my skills.

I would offer these 3 suggestions to see if the company and you are a fit:

1. ASK QUESTIONS

Just like a normal Business to Business sales call. Don't be afraid to ask questions about the company and what they are looking for. There is no better way to see if you might be a fit for their business and they are a fit for you.

2. BE CAUTIOUS IF THERE ARE FEW ANSWERS

As professional salespeople, we know that the answers we receive to qualification questions are the basis for our presentation. If the company that you are applying for is having problems giving you answers to the questions you have brought up, that may mean there has not been enough thought put into how your position relates to their business. We may all expect businesses to conduct analyses, but the reality is not all of them do. This can be a set up for problems in the future.

3. DO NOT TAKE THE POSITION UNLESS YOU CAN SOLVE A PROBLEM

If there is no clear problem to be solved, the business may not be the best fit for you. Get a clear understanding of what the company needs or wants to solve. Better yet, be very clear about how your skills are the solution to that.

With the current job market, these positions can often be at a premium. There are likely many qualified candidates for each one. Taking the time to do the 3 items listed above, can help to qualify you and the company as the best partners.
