Some years ago I advised a client with another major ERP where that client had spent substantial (hundreds of thousands of Pounds) on bespoke development around their version 4 system only to be advised by the vendor that they were upgrading to version 5 by the end of the year and were withdrawing all support for version 4 at that time.
This upgrade would totally break the bespoke development around version 4 and require major further investment and give rise to substantial business disruption and business risk.
The client did not want to upgrade at that time and requested my assistance.
I shared a little known legal case that would require the vendor to continue supporting version 4.

We arranged a meeting and I shared the legal case which required that the vendor continue to support version 4. We threatened legal action if the vendor did not comply.
The vendor referred to their US principals and returned three days later with a contract guaranteeing support for version 4 for five years, the term requested by the client.
