The shifting focus of HR in 2020

It’s 2020, and HR is changing. Are your hiring practices keeping up?

One way that HR is evolving is a focus on inclusion beyond mere “diversity.” It’s a word I hear often from clients I work with here at Prestige Scientific.

Diversity has always been about getting the right demographics in the door. But inclusion means creating a culture where a wide variety of people feel welcome. In the past, for instance, hiring and onboarding practices have often centered around finding the right “culture fit,” but today, HR leaders are recognizing that an obsession with culture fit can often lead to biased hiring.

Shifting away from culture fit to a true reverence for diversity in hiring practices is a great first step. But once hired, you also have to support your team with ongoing progressive practices such as fair pay, promotion equity and thoughtful training and development. Lars Schmidt of Fast Company calls it “[the art of moving your approach] from transactional programs to embedded practices.”

To truly foster diversity and take advantage of all the benefits it brings, you have to go beyond creative job descriptions and demographic tracking. You have to create an organization that cultivates diversity and inclusion for the long game.
