Shifting from Lack to Abundance

Shifting from Lack to Abundance

In the world of leadership, representation and diversity are integral components of a thriving and innovative workforce. For Latina professionals and leaders, the journey towards securing a place at the table has often been marked by challenges. Whether it's seeing each other as the "enemy" and competing for the "one seat" or it's due to systemic barriers, we often focus on the lack.

Here is some of what we hear:

  • There's a lack of Latina representation.
  • There's a lack of funding for Latina entrepreneurs.
  • Latinas are paid 54 cents on the dollar compared to their non-Hispanic male counterparts.
  • Latine leaders make up less than 3% of C-suite roles.
  • 1 in 4 Latinas don’t have access to health insurance.

All this is true, and it is vital to acknowledge the challenges that exist with overcoming these barriers AND, I want to invite you to consider what we DO HAVE:

  • Latinas are the largest group of women workers in the US, numbering over 12 million and accounting for 16% of the female labor force.
  • Latinas are starting businesses at a rate of 6x's more than any other demographic.
  • Latinas are going to college at higher rates than ever before.
  • 75% of Latinos are digitally active vs. 68% of the total population.
  • Hispanics represent $1.9 trillion in purchasing power and if we were a country, we would represent the 5th largest GDP in the world.

Reframing the Narrative

It's undeniable that the Latina community has faced significant disparities and obstacles. The statistics can be disheartening, and it's easy to feel disheartened when we're underrepresented, facing pay gaps, or dealing with stereotypes, microaggressions and unconscious bias in the workplace.

However, to truly harness the power of leadership, it's crucial that we not only examine the weaknesses and threats but understand that our cultural capital is a strength and provides us with a window of opportunities.

What is Cultural Capital?

Cultural capital refers to the unique knowledge, skills, and experiences that individuals and communities bring to the table due to their cultural backgrounds. For Latina professionals and leaders, our rich cultural heritage is a wellspring of unique strengths. Our stories, lived experiences and unique perspectives offer a wealth of resources to enrich the workplace and our personal lives.

Embracing Our Cultural Capital

Here are some ways to leverage your cultural capital as a Latina professional and leader:

  1. Bilingual and Multilingual Skills: Many Latinas are fluent in more than one language. This skill is invaluable in our globalized world and can be a significant advantage in various industries.
  2. Cultural Sensitivity: Growing up with diverse traditions and backgrounds, Latinas tend to be more culturally sensitive and empathetic. This ability can foster better relationships and collaborations in the workplace. Individuals who belong to the dominant culture may have a harder time picking up on cultural nuances than those that aren't part of it.
  3. Resilience and Adaptability: Our community has overcome adversity with grace and resilience. These qualities are crucial in leadership positions where change and challenges are constant. I like to say we are graceful and gritty!
  4. Community Engagement: Latinas often have a strong sense of community and social responsibility. These values can be used to create a positive and inclusive work environment. We look out for each other and how we can contribute to the team.
  5. Family-Centered Values: Our cultural background emphasizes the importance of family. This can instill excellent time-management and prioritization skills that are valuable both at home and in the workplace.

Creating an Abundance Mindset

The transition from a scarcity mindset to one of abundance is not just about recognizing the value of your cultural capital; it's also about being confident in those differences. Like my mama said. "Be proud of who you are and don't forget where you come from." Encourage others to share their unique perspectives and experiences. As leaders, we must champion diversity and inclusion, ensuring that our every person feels welcomed to show up as their authentic self.

Conclusion

Let's recognize and celebrate the cultural capital we, as Latina professionals and leaders, bring to the table. We are more than just statistics; we are a powerful force of change and innovation. By expanding our mindset from one of lack to one of abundance, we not only empower ourselves but we harness our strengths as a community for future generations.
