South Africa’s Persistent Inequality and the Call for a Feminist Economy
South Africa remains one of the most unequal countries in the world. Despite 30 years of democracy, poverty and economic hardship persist for many, especially women. In a country where almost half of all women are unemployed and consistently earn less than their male counterparts, the need for economic empowerment is urgent.
Recently, we had the opportunity to participate in ActionAid South Africa ’s Young Urban Women’s Feminist Economy Manifesto. This powerful initiative advocates for feminist economic reforms designed to empower women and young people, calling on policymakers, international institutions, and communities to address and transform gendered economic disparities.
The Feminist Economy Manifesto sets out to amplify the voices of young women affected by financial austerity measures, aiming to provide real alternatives to conventional economic policies. Key objectives include:
