The Top 3 Benefits I LOVE About Freelancing

What is freelance? What does it mean to be a freelancer? What do they do? What are some reasons you should consider being one?

These are all questions that may come to mind when you hear the word “freelance” and when you Google “how to earn money online” or “how to earn extra money at home” so that you can learn how to be your own boss, work from home, and earn additional income to help with rising costs. (BTW, here’s an article I provided commentary to titled “how to earn an extra $1,000 this month.”)

A freelancer is also referred to as an independent contractor, particularly when it has to do with compensation. Being a “freelancer” or “independent contractor” often means that a business will pay you a gross rate and you’re technically not an employee working for them. You aren’t entitled to benefits and you can both end the work when you wish (depending on the contract).

So, what does it mean to freelance?

The answer may vary from person to person, so here are a few benefits of this career that help define a freelancer. These are some of my favorite benefits, as I can make time for my family, friends, and hobbies, while also doing work that I love to do when I want to do it.

Benefits of freelancing:

  • Freelancers work for themselves. They make their own hours, schedule, and work at the time they want, for as long as they need to get client work done. This comes with its own challenges (like spending time chasing down invoices and running the business side of things), but having some control over the amount of money you earn and how you spend your time goes a long way to offset those business-owning struggles.
  • Freelancers get to choose their clients. Depending on the situation, some freelancers find clients because they are approached, other times they pitch them. Heard about an interesting company in your niche that launched a product? Reach out and offer your writing services! One of the top benefits of freelancing is that freelancers don’t have to work with clients they don’t want to. Remember that boss you couldn’t stand at one of your jobs? You still had to deal with them. As a freelancer, if you don’t like working with someone, you don’t have to. Simply part ways at the end of the project.
  • Freelancers choose their work. Love designing social media posts? Prefer to write ad campaigns or email newsletters? Dying to write articles for a magazine? There are so many types of freelance work available–especially different types of freelance writing–that you’re likely to find something you want to do and are good at, as a freelancer. You can even switch to a different type of freelance work when you complete a project, if you're feeling like your work is stagnant and becoming more of a chore than fun. So, what does it mean to freelance? This career path can be whatever you’d like it to be.

I’ll let you decide that one for yourself.
