Top 5 Best Books Read in 2023

Have you read anything good lately? Here is my year-end list of top 5 favourite nonfiction books I’ve read in 2023. Full disclosure - #1 is not a business book, and that’s partly why it’s so great.

#5. ‘101 ESSAYS that will CHANGE the way YOU THINK’ by Brianna Wiest

Why should you "pursue purpose over passion, embrace negative thinking, see wisdom in daily routine, and become aware of the cognitive biases that are creating the way you see your life." These are just a few topics explored in this fascinating essay book that will change your thoughts. It's a great drop-in read if you have limited time, and I recommend starting with the essay titles and reading the ones that jump out at you first. Final comment: this is not a business book per se; it's more about investing in your emotional intelligence - a highly sought-after skill in any workplace.

#4. ‘SPIN Selling’ by Neil Rackham

To sell is human (1), and we're all in the business of selling regardless of our professions. Every guru has a different sales methodology, but what makes this one different is that hard research data completely backs it. We all want the evidence, and the SPIN approach is nothing new – but it's fascinating to learn about it and put it to the test. If you're a sales professional consistently outselling the competition, you probably use this approach and don't even know it. If you're not hitting your sales targets, this book provides excellent insights from the buyer's perspective and will get you to stop talking and start listening.

#3. ‘Stop Using the “B” WORD’ by Todd Hopkins

If you're like most people, you want to find out why you're so busy, but you don't have the time. Let's face it – we're all a bit addicted to distractions, and one trick to overcome this is to stop using the word 'busy' and replace it with 'productive.' I posted previously on LinkedIn about hearing the author speak on how to find your purpose. If you want to overcome distractions and stay focused on achieving your goals – this book is worth your time.

#2. ‘The First 90 Days’ by Michael Watkins

Have you started a new job recently or been promoted internally? You may have new leadership responsibilities and have stepped outside your comfort zone. Whatever the case, by taking that leap, you put yourself in a vulnerable position, and the first three months are essential to ensure you don’t derail your success. This book (written by a Harvard Professor) provides a blueprint of crucial strategies and tools to help you conquer the transition challenge. Let’s face it, change is critical in business, and if you’re ready for the next step, this book is a massive learning resource.

#1. ‘1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die’ by Rob Dimery

Maybe you’ve heard the quote, “You are not your work,” but in our hyper-working culture and era of connectivity – the lines are often blurred. Escaping “workism” (2) is vital, and often it’s as simple as having a different focus. Music has always been a refuge for many (3), and my personal music journey continued when someone gifted me this book. If you’re a music lover, this book covers all the great artists and genres and has fascinating insights and trivia. Plus, with music being so accessible digitally, you can listen to every album (if you dare) from obscure to mainstream. Drop a note about your favourite album in the comments, and I’ll let you know if it made the cut.
