"Tree tall, planter dead"? No, we can make a difference !
'Boompje groot, plantertje dood' is a Dutch saying. It means so much as when you undertake or start something yourself, that you will not enjoy the benefits of it. Or you can take it literally in forestry, meaning you will never see the effect of a change in management.
Luckily this is not true. I planted this sessile oak (Q petraea) in our backgarden in 2007. I took it as a seedling from the strict reserve 't Rot, when hanging dendrometers in t Rot and planted it at home. It is already a tall tree now!
So, now with Europe's forests facing the rapid effects of climate change and more countries' forests tipping to become a source of carbondioxide, we may feel desperate and thinking we can never revert these trends.
But the above shows this is not true: we can make difference! Gradually and consistently working towards a better adapted, more diverse and resilient forest is doable. and we will see the effects within 20 years . see www.climatesmartforestry.eu

1moIt's indeed impressing how nature literally can recover our empty landscapes. Sharing these experiences is offering hope.

2moHelemaal waar, Gert-Jan! En niet te vergeten: dit laat ook zien dat wij -daar wat het kan- met duurzaam beheer relatief snel een hernieuwbare grondstof kunnen produceren met behoud of bevordering van andere ecosysteemdiemsten. Dat is onze ambitie met het project “Hoogwaardig houtgebruik”.
