What is the IB Program Really About?

IB at its core is more than a collection of subject syllabi. It is a system of learning that prepares students to be thinking and creative people, who are aware of the world and who have attributes of being a lifelong learner. It’s about creating a passion for knowledge rather than obsession with achievements.

 

What is more, it is to recall that is rather an integrated approach to learning. This is not academic cramming which involves learning information by heart with an intent of reproducing it on exams. It concerns problem solving and interconnection of information from one area with that from another area. It is about receiving and give respect when it comes to matters regarding another people’s culture and language. Yes, to me it is about use of knowledge, within practical contexts, it is about engagement, about being an active global citizen.

 

How IB Empowers Learners

The IB program does this through a framework that operates through the strands of inquiry, trans-disciplinary skill connections, and personal, social and emotional learning. Let's break down some key elements:

 

·      Inquiry-led learning: Forget passive lectures! IB allows students to come up with questions, learn other’s ideas, and form their point of view themselves. This reinforces the learning process, and the students start to own up their schooling.

·      Interdisciplinary connections: IB requires students to look for relationships between different subject areas. For instance, learning history may require reading works that were written in that period or discovery of innovations that occurred in that period. Thus, this approach can be widely used to foster a rather rich view on the world and improve critical thinking.

·      Developing key skills: In addition to academics, IB is based on Scenario, an approach, which provides skills in communication, interpersonal relations, research, and time management and organization. These are skills that one cannot afford to miss in a university, and beyond, for that matter.

·      The Extended Essay: This independent research project helps a student go more personal and explore something they’re interested in. It is a strenuous but worthwhile process, which develops research skills, problem solving abilities and academic writing.

·      Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS): This is another component which makes student to be in touch with the society and the world. It is about learning to take care of ourselves, of others and of our nation.

 

IB Areas for Improvement

First of all, it is important to note that the benefits of the IB program are obvious, however this type of program also has its drawbacks. Here are some areas where I believe improvements could be made:

 

·      Workload and pressure: This program is considered to be very challenging and the workload in the classes is comparatively high. This can cause stress, anxiety, and even the rotten apple effect, most likely to students who are not academic-good students or not encouraged enough. In addition, student’s well-being and adequate support should be considered more seriously.

·      Accessibility and equity: These problems are associated with the fact that the IB program is considered as privileged and exclusive for learners belonging to various groups. It is therefore important for efforts to be made by ensuring that access is provided and that program is made equitable to all students.

·      Assessment and grading: Though the framework of the IB program aims for the development of a student’s total personality, assessment tends to be heavily based on tests. This can place immense pressure and is perhaps not the best way of truly ascertaining the capabilities of a student. Finding out new ways of assessment and offering the students more chances to receive formative feedback might be productive.

·      Teacher training and support: IB teachers require pedagogy and content knowledge in order to teach the program appropriately. The mentioned points reflect the beliefs about the teacher professional development and the continuous support to achieve the goals. These support would include personnel, coaches/specialists, Release Time/faculty mentors, technology support and consultants, and adequate funding for the program.

 

To Choose or Not to Choose the IB Program?

Well, is the IB program the one that will suit you best? Here's a breakdown to help you decide:

 

Reasons to Choose IB:

·      You're a curious and motivated learner: IB can be perfect for any learner who loves to be self-motivated, self-directed, and willingness in having a change in point of view.

·      You're aiming for top universities: IB is an approved program in hundreds of universities across the globe and can put you at an advantage when it comes to admissions.

·      You want a well-rounded education: IB is not just academic, it also emphasizes on growth and skills as well for students.

·      You're interested in global perspectives: IB contributes to growth of inter-cultural individuals and the development of global outlook.

 

Reasons IB Might Not Be the Best Fit:

·      You struggle with independent learning: IB entails the virtue of workmanship and self-motivation and time management skills.

·      You're overwhelmed by heavy workloads: Some feel that the IB program is challenging and may not be favourable in case one is already overwhelmed.

·      You prefer a more traditional approach to learning: Overdependence on several quizzes, assignments, forecasts, and guidelines, one will require massive memorization; hence, IB is not suitable if you excel under high expectations and precise schedules.

 

A Final Thought

Selecting an academic program is never an easy call. Information must be gathered and to also consider the positives and negatives, the particular needs and preferred type of learning a student requires, in addition, speaking with the teachers, counselors, and current IB students.

Looking back on the time when I first joined an international school as a counsellor, I realized that sometimes I had no idea what IB was all about. IB has its own language and environment, it was a totally different universe.
