Unstuck in 20 minutes
Every so often when I feel like I have to do something and know perfectly well how to do it, however somehow end up not getting it done. Things get in the way, the thoughts take me places, I find an excuse why not or why not now. Procrastination is creeping in and while something could be done in 5 minutes or an hour it is dragged on for hours, days, weeks and maybe even months.
Sounds familiar?
Feeling stuck?
Want to get something done, move forward, change but feel like something is getting on the way, blocking you, influencing your motivation, engagement, confidence, and performance?
Tips ‘Get unstuck in 20 minutes’:
· See the Bigger picture. Connect to the higher purpose, think why do you want to do it in the first place, why is important to you. The task might be just a steppingstone, a piece of the bigger puzzle that is aligned with your values, vision, mission, purpose. If you feel like you HAVE to do it it is a different energy than if you WANT to do it or get to do it. (Spiritual Factor/Influencer)
· Eat the elephant in small pieces. Start with 5 to 20-minute intervals. Thinking it is a big scary task that will take too much of your mental energy before you even start. If you set your mind to making the first step, commit to only 5, 10, 20 minutes at a time it mentally is not as demanding for concentration, alertness etc. ‘The hardest workout is to get to the gym door’ (Mental Factor/Influencer)
· Set up the working space that works for you. Look around your workplace, see how you can create an inspiring and comfortable space for yourself. Examples: a quiet place, no distractions, switch off the devices that might distract you, the right temperature, music or not, no noise, smells, a cup of tea, flowers, green plants …whatever works well for you. (Environment Factor/Influencer)
· Energize yourself physically – be it a coffee or a vitamin juice boost, a quick meditation, or a breathing exercise, a walk, swim or a run, jumping up and down, or petting your dog whatever gives you the optimal physical state to be at your best is your best friend.
· Check in with your emotions – Calm down, see what you like about this task/situation, what are the opportunities, be curious where it can take you, trust yourself and your knowledge that you can do it, be curious. If you are experiencing doubt, fear, apathy, frustration, worry etc think about what is behind it and how true is that, what is a different way to look at it, reach out to other resources to support a missing link or something else that might help you to execute it. · Create a support team – Think whom do you know that you can ask for quick support, brainstorm, resource etc? Maybe, someone, you can call for a quick energy boost. If someone next to you is depriving you of your energy, motivation, performance try to move away from that person either physically or try empathetic communication to set better boundaries. (Social Influence/Factor)
Those are some tips and they do work.

3yThanks for the share. Feeling the same too often! What I personnaly do is taking a deep breath, calm down for 30 sec to 1 min and I say to myself, start this task. Often I switch off my phone and put my computer in do not disturb + full screen. It helps.

3ySo true Natalya! I generally put something I'm dreading off for far too long - then when I actually dive in - it ends up that I built it up to be FAR worse than the reality the task. Any thoughts on how to stop the negative feeling toward the task initially?

3yDefinitely taking a break to exercise or go outside and at least walk works wonders for me. Never ceases to amaze me how once I finally start a project I have been dreading, it isn't so bad!
